Studentphil you will soon get the hang of it! Up until a year or so ago I relied on a 20Gb HD now I have 3 x HD biggest being 300Gb and I'm filling that fast 125Gb of Movies (and they are mainly under 1Gb per movie)0

That's a bit presumptuous isn't it?"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Up until "fairly" recently space cost a lot, as such all applications were written to avoid using disk space.
The evolution of PCs has meant that media has come down in price. And these modern PC software developers just write messier applications, without a care of the storage used.
What do you do with Mainframes, I thought they were dead?:beer:0 -

Likewise here, It has been noticed that there are now relatively few space issues with MF batch jobs now that dasd is cheaper.
About 6-10 years ago we were always getting SB/SE37 abends, now they are rare !0 -

NEVER, ask any major insurance / finance company what system they use.
MAINFRAMEs - much more stable and reliable than any other platform.0 -
I thought Mainframes were only really used as servers these days.:beer:0

Any system with more than one user connected can be classed as a server.
If you look in any of the big DIY store or Parts Depts of garages, the plain looking mono consoles are usually attached to a central mainframe somewhere else. The "online" system runs whilst users need to access the databases for various transactions, queries, etc, but then close down for overnight batch processing. This is when all updates, backups, etc are done.
** Anyway, this is going off thread, maybe a new post about Mainframes ?0 -
I have 2x 300GB and 1x 120GB reason being a do a lot of video editing for videos about history of the local area and the convert them in to DVD add menus etc so need the space for it all, As I keep them on my HDD for a min of 12 months then of course I got my own projects etc so it all builds up.0
