is there an easy way to swap/trade handsets ?

that isn't done through the small ads ?

i've got a new blackberry curve 8520 that's unlocked and i'd ideally like to swap it for an earlier iphone model - something like the 8gb iphone or iphone 3gs.

I know you can't really offer trades on ebay, but it's not something i've really considered doing online before.

    You can try hotukdeals.
But no one in their right mind is going to give you an iphone (old or new) for a blackberry 8520 or any blackberry (as long as the iphone costs more).
  • well using ebay as a rough barometer, the cost of a second hand iphone 3g is roughly the same as a new Curve, sometimes only a few quid apart.

I know that's not the be-all and end-all of it, but it's a rough idea. but anyway, i'll give hotukdeals a go - thanks.

You could try and post on some mobile specific forums asking people if they would like to trade. I noticed someone had traded an iPhone 4 for a HTC Desire HD a couple of days ago on a forum I was reading.

Personally it's not the sort of thing I would do as I think the chances of the person not posting the iPhone to you and then keeping the Blackberry could potentially be high. Have you considered just selling your Blackberry and using that to buy another phone?

What is drawing you to the iPhone? You could consider an Android device which are very reasonable (and feature rich). Orange sell their San Francisco model for less than £100, which could be unlocked if you are not on Orange.

  • I appreciate an online trade of any nature would be full of potholes, so it's not something i'd ideally go in to unless i was confident that i'd get the outcome i wanted.

I did have a HTC Desire but it died - fell victim to the rebooting "issue" and rebooted one time too many and just wouldn't come back.

After reading a few horror stories about HTC taking 6 weeks or more to repair some phones and sending them back with the rebooting issue still not fixed, i decided to try a blackberry but now realise I really don't like it.

I'm drawn to the iphone because it's an iphone I guess. I've had many different handsets over the years, and i'd just like to experience owning one I guess - the gadget nut in me would be very happy :)

I'm going to spend a while monitoring some blackberry listings on ebay to get a sense of what i can sell the phone for, so if i do do that then certainly using the money to get another handset is what i'd do.

HTC are a very good company and I hadn't heard of any huge issues with repairing broken devices. I'm quite an Android geek too. I hadn't heard of the rebooting bug but it's always worth updating to the latest firmware. I used to have a HTC Hero before my Desire HD so missed the original Desire generation of phones.

I understand what you mean about wanting an iPhone because it is an iPhone but if you get an older model it may be a step backwards. I always thought I would get an iPhone but after I discovered Android I realised that the iOS would be too limiting and constricting for me. I love the flexibility and openness of Android. It takes a bit of getting used to but you can really make it 'you'. What did you do with your old Desire?

  • You could always try your local Cex store who might allow you to trade it in for an earlier iphone

Got on the phone to Orange and, after a lengthy phonecall, which I don't really want to go in to, that's how I got the Blackberry.

Strangely enough, that's exactly what I did today :)

I've now got an 8gb iPhone 3g, but it's on O2 though so I need to sort out getting it unlocked.

I bought a PAYG O2 sim and put £15 quid on it as i understand O2 will unlock iPhones if you ring them and they'll take the payment off the balance of the card.

Only downside is that the iPhone came with no charger and a piece of crap generic USB cable - the type you can get out of the 99p shop. So I need to get those bits, as well as as decent shock absorbing case as well.
