had to have my dog put down

I don't normally venture much on this board but I am so upset as I have had to have my lovely dog put down today. She was the loveliest terrier cross that I rescued and was 16 + and had cataracts, gone deaf, arthritis and having 'accidents' for 2 months and hasn't gone out for around 6 months. I am sat here crying my eyes out and feel so bad as the kids are upset too, they can't remember ever being without her. The vets were so good though and kind and it was just like she went to sleep. I stayed with her while they did it as it was the last thing I could do for her but I feel so bad right now and feel like I have killed her. I know its the right thing but I still feel bad. There is a gap in the house and I keep looking for her without realising.
Sorry but I know there are people out there who will understand :(

BIG HUGS - you did the right thing, her standard of life was poor and she was put out of her suffering - its the kindest thing you could have done for her.
You also gave her a loving home so that she was loved to the end.
Of course you will miss her, I dread the day I will have to go through the same thing so you have my deepest sympathy x

    Sorry to hear that.
Some people don't understand, but pets can totally become a part of the family.
The gap you feel will pass with time. Remember the good times, and i'm sure you gave her a good life.
It sounds like her quality of life was not good at the end and you most definitely done the right thing. If she could, she would thank you!
we had to put our last dog down who was getting on, had trouble walking, and was having 'accidents' in the house. She was always such a clean dog and I could see that she felt guilty and embarrassed about having such accidents and it broke my heart. In the end we put her down too.
Chin up. It's the circle of life and you have nothing to feel guilty about.

The hardest thing to do is to have an adored pet put out of his or her pain. I've done it too many times (once feels too much!), but I do feel its so much kinder to the animal than a life of drugs, incontinence and pain. A friend of mine kept her dog alive far too long in my eyes, when he couldnt stand, had to be carried everywhere, was incontinent so that she had to get up many times every night - you could see that what had been a happy, manic little dog was sad, in pain and miserable, and in my eyes kept alive for the owner's sake and not the dog's.

Allow yourself to grieve, its ok to be sad and miss her. She's running free in Rainbow Bridge, chasing rabbits, and wagging her tail. xxxx

I read your post like it was my own. I was in the same situation 2 weeks ago - and my dog sounded exactly like yours. Cataracts, arthritis, accidents etc - the works! She was also 16.

We need to remember it was their time. And we as owners have the power to do the kindest and most loving thing possible - end the misery. I knew my dog was deaf, blind, and losing her balance/bumping into things plus having accidents - it was no quality of life. She wasn't getting anything from me and I wasn't getting anything from her.

After this grief, you will feel the relief coming through, I promise. You realise how cruel it would have been to have let her go on any longer in her scary world.

    Love and thinking of you.

  • thank you all so much for your kind words. I'm still crying but I know it was the best to let her go while she still had some dignity. I know it would only get worse its xmas and always bad even though there is no good time.

Thank you, you are all so nice on this forum.

Big hug for you desperate housewife. I really do know how you feel...felt like I'd had my heart ripped out when it happened with my dog.

The only consolation is to tell yourself that if it had to be your dog in pain, or YOU because you had to save her from that...well, it's no contest really is it? Your suffering has spared her and that's the last kindness you can give her.

She had a good, safe, loving home with you and she was happy. You gave her the best you could and nobody could have done more.

    Hope you're ok.
