The car isn't stolen though. If it was stolen the Police would wouldn't have written a letter, they'd have just come round and taken it off the OP.
If it's a fraud case there's obviously more to it....Maybe cloning the cars? That would explain how the vehicle wasn't listed as stolen on various databases that the OP might have used to check the reg out...If it's a 'ringing' gang, then that would explain the fraud case. The car probably was stolen at some point, but tyracking its owner could prove dificult as chances are the plates have been replaced and the chassis number ground off and replaced to resemble all the details of a legit motor.

    We can guess all day.
Maybe the dealer was using a garage "under the arches", and just hasn't paid the rent as a garage, or connected to next doors meter or something that simple.

    It could be tax fraud.
  • Guys, although I appreciate all your input... MSE paranoia might be taking its toll! The car has been legitimately sold by somebody to a man (who has committed a fraud in relation to another car) who sold the car onto me, legitimately. The BTP thing has nothing to do with my situation beyond the coincidence that I'm one of the few who the guy involved didn't actually materially defraud.

    Thanks everyone! Big relief!

Plenty of that in the Motoring section believe me :rotfl::D

Glad it's not as bad as everyone's assumed though ;)

This thread shouts SCAM at me, the OP pulling your chains

They can't even supply/post the number of BTP they were given.
