Giving name of house purchaser to electricity company?

Options
We are seeking to close our account with Scottish power. they refuse to close it unles we give them the name of the purchaser. i don't see any reason they need this excpet to market to them - are we being awkward not giving it?

It seems to me they can write to the occupier...

Any thoughts appreciated!

Possibly you are being awkward, as are they.

At the end of the day you don't have to tell them anything if it's that important to you. You could just write & tell them that you will be leaving the property on x date, enclose a final meter reading and that you accept no liability thereafter. Also point out that should they feel the need to have the new occupiers name they are of course free to visit and ask them on / after that date.
  • Thanks. It really is there refusal to close our account without the info that is annoying.

We'll try and get buyers details - although I am still uncomfortable about passing on their details - must be the data protaction training!:rotfl:

Ovo asked the same of me when I left my last house. In the end I gave them the name of the Housing Association as I too felt awkward about giving someone else's name over. Seems to be a new thing as I haven't been asked before.

    Don't do it!

It's really none of their business. When I moved into my house (which was served by Scottish Power), they simply sent me a massive estimated bill addressed to "The occupier" with a contract for me to fill in and sign. I refused to sign any contract as I wanted to continue with my old supplier who were cheaper than these people. Until the switch was effected, I just called the SP automated meter read line to give true readings, then they sent an amended bill. I paid this by cheque.

I'm glad that the previous owners didn't give them my name, although it seems they did to United Utilities and the council - and got it wrong

These aren't domestic purposes though. Whilst i recognise that i am not restricted by DPO i do not see how SP can force me to give someones personal details which they would otherwise not have access to - it seems to bypass the whole point.

Thanks to everyone else for their comments.

They don't need to market to them - they will be getting them as their customer anyway :)

You mean you don't already know who you've sold your property to?

What would you class a house as then, if not domestic?

Anyone can find out who owns a house by looking at the land registry records. ;)

Give them the name and address of the estate agent - that's what you pay your 2% for. The energy account will automatically close when the new customer requests supply or switches. Read the meter on exit!
