Job Seekers Allowance over Christmas.

Can someone help me please, my son who is 200miles away is due to sign on on 24th and 31st Dec. The 31st isn't a problem, but if he has to sign on the 24th it would mean him not getting home for Christmas.

Will benefits offices be open on 24th?

Thanks anyone who can help.

The office will be open but I would be surprised if he was expected to actually sign on. The only way to know for sure is to ask. Incidentally I live 300 miles from my family and have to work all day on Christmas Eve (also for DWP) so if he does have to sign on that day he'll need to work around it like anyone else.

What would happen if he had a job where he had to work on the 24th? My son works in Morrisons and will be working very late on Christmas Eve so that the rest of us can get our last minute provisions.

Maybe if he has to sign he can do so early in the morning?

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

    lol, why?!
People pull sickies all the time. I never got in trouble for pulling one personally....!

the sack! You never pulled a sickie before!!? Everyone I know has pulled loads and never got in any trouble whatsoever. Just say you aren't feeling well and cant come in.
However, none of this helps the OP....
He'll have to ask whether he is expected to sign on on Christmas eve or not.

    Really?
    Its a normal working/functioning day?
  • Doesn't work like that in retail around Christmas.

You'd complain if everyone at your local supermarket pulled a sickie on the 24th.

I don't actually think it is very good advice.
