VERY hot boiler/smell of burning

i just woke up to a strong smell of burning, the sort smell you get when you switch on a dusty fan heater, if you know what i mean?
we have the warm air heating in our house, and it is usually very good but the past few days weve noticed the house is taking much longer to warm up. i just put it down to it being colder outside and that the boiler needs 'defluffing'... something i do every year or so as the fluff builds up in there, i take the boiler covers off, and clear out the vents (usually with the hoover).
woke up oh to go investigate the smell and he said the boiler is red hot, so much so that he couldnt ever touch the cover. He switched the pilot light off, left the cupboard door open and said we need to get someone out to it.
it is freezing in here already, and with xmas being just round the corner we really could do without a massive bill for this, although of course this is important and for our safety needs to be looked at properly. Anyone have any suggestions as to what may be the problem and potential cost estimates?
I am off to defluff it now it is cooler in there.
Thank goodness for dd2 and her early morning demands for milk and a cuddle waking me up! :rotfl:

Get someone to look at it ASAP. You will probably be looking at £80 +vat for some one to look at it plus spare parts costs.
Leave it much longer and you will be into the xmas period and then the cal out rates will dramtically increase, then of course the VAT rise on 1st Jan tooPoliticians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.0 -
Mine started doing that.
It was the bearing in the fan that was beginning to seize. It eventually did. I have SG maintenance so the fan was replaced. No idea how much it would cost you though.0 -
I'd be worried why the safety circuit didn't activate if it really was near to catching alight.0
