Thanks all for the comments, will look at a way to upload her photo.

I am now worried that I have harmed her by allowing her to go up and down stairs. Any advice on how I can check??

Hehehe, sorry to chuckle, but the idea of stopping a puppy from doing whatever it is determined to do with all it's boundless energy......

I think you're worrying far too much. I grew up with GS, they all went up and down the stairs, true, the old hips weren't so good in old age, but cod liver oil, royal jelly etc. helped no end. My mum moved to a bungalow, new dog, no stairs, same joint aches in latter years, really, just concentrate on the good behaviour you want and enjoy the rest of her.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

Go again? Thats makes no sense

I read that to mean walks should be 5 mins for each of their month age

so a 3 month old pup gets walked for 15 mins

a 6 month old pup gets walked for 30 mins, and so on
A heap big thank you to everyone who posts the comps, your all stars!

Proud to of never used or felt the need to use a chain of any sorts on a puppy

Probably makes it a bit easier on the owner to build up like that as well - could you imagine it if you had to go straight to the walking needed by a fully grown giant GSD?
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

hehe I'm sure my old beagle cross could of run rings round a full grown giant GSD .. my current gsd x couldn't even walk to the bottom of my street nowadays but she helped me lose 6 stone over the past couple of years, they do keep you fit :D

now where can I borrow a dog :rotfl:

  • I had a beagle when I was a kid. My mother couldn't accept how we would disappear for 4 hours and then come back, claiming I'd just been walking the dog.

Lovely dogs, designed for the long haul (poor foxes).

Finally, I need to do some proper training with her, what are the best books to use please?

Sorry for the confusion re the walking. Yes it is 5 minutes per month of dog's age. For the training side, I would recommend that you join a dog training club. The Good Citizen scheme is an excellent one, and covers everything from basic obedience to socialisation, and includes such things as food manners, recall, etc. It's also a good way to meet other dog people - we met Oakley's love of his life there, a white GSD, who we still walk with 12 months later.

Books are good as a reference check, and I have lots of them, but the most valuable work I feel was done in the training classes I did with him.
