I have a beautiful 5 month old german shepherd !!!!!. She is fine during the day but it gets to evening and she is constantly whining to be outside. After a few minutes outside, she barks like mad and we bring her in. The cyle starts again after about 15 minutes.
I ignored her once and was rewarded with a lovely puddle near the door!
Any advice on how I can stop this cycle please?
Also, just read that it is wrong to allow her to go up and down the stairs, something she has been doing since she was about 3 months, can someone please let me know why?
Finally, I need to do some proper training with her, what are the best books to use please?

hi jazzy, i'm having a few problems with one of my dogs so i know how you feel! my dog is always barking to go out, literally about every 15-20 mins. I made the mistake of ignoring him thinking he was just messing about and i was rewarded with a poo..eek.
as for training, i have victoria stilwell's book..it's me or the dog - how to have the perfect pet. she tried to look at things from a dogs point of view and then advise you according to each situation, i will have a look in it later to see if there is anything i can pass on to you
sorry - i know i wasn't much help lolThe more one gets to know of men, the more one values dogs.0 -
Thank you sooo much. It is comforting to know that someone else is having the same issues.0

i have had a look in the book and it says that it is important that you stick to a routine when trying to train your dog to go outside, and when she does go outside give her lots of praise. it doesn't really mention what you are having problems with, but i guess a routine might help your puppy to understand that she will get let out and may help resolve it? as you can tell i'm not a dog trainer lol!
it also says to use a biological cleaner when cleaning up the uring to eliminate the enzymes so there is no lingering scent that could attract the dog to wee again in the same spot. The more one gets to know of men, the more one values dogs.0 -
Are you saying she is actually needing to wee every 15 minutes, or is she just going outside to mess around most times? If she's weeing every time then that's not normal and needs checking out.
But even if she isn't weeing every time, I see your problem - you can't just ignore her and hope this isn't the time she does need a wee!
I don't know what to suggest really apart from what's already been said about regular routine. Regarding the dog going up and down stairs, isn't the reason for this that it can be harmful on their joints..?"Your life is what your thoughts make it"

R.i.P our beautiful girl Suki. We'll love and miss you forever

I believe that not going up and down stairs at a young age is to protect growing limbs/joints/growth plates.2 angels in heaven :A0

I think there is some discussion as to whether stairs are problem or not but generally best avoided0

Charging up and down stairs and jumping is not recommended for young German Sheps to try to prevent any hip problems developing whilst they are growing. Additionally, it is recommended that walks should be limited to 5 mins per day per month.
My loopy dog sometimes does this woofing to go in and out in the evening these days, but for him it seems to be a reaction to central heating! He often ends up laid down on the patio outside the door quite happy, but then he does have a very thick long coat.0 -
I just wanted to say....
Show us the photo pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Thanks all for the comments, will look at a way to upload her photo.
I am now worried that I have harmed her by allowing her to go up and down stairs. Any advice on how I can check??0 -
