Hi

We currently have Sky+ in the main room and another box in our bedroom with a mirror subscription (multiroom).

My mum is coming to stay with us and we want to put another Sky box in the spare bedroom for her to watch what she wants where she wants and so can we, is it possible to have 2 multirooms with extra subscriptions on ?

Otherwise how do we add a Freeview box onto a TV in the spare bedroom when we have Sky in the other rooms? I am hoping we can subscribe and unsubscribe to the spare room subscription when we need to as Mum is going to be coming and going fot up to a month at a time at intervals but dont need to keep it a continuous subscription if I can help it I would rather pay an additional £10 for the month she is here and not for the months she is not.

Anyone any solutions please as mum is arriving next week!

Thanks in advance

:)

In terms of Sky, you can have a freesat (or freesat from sky for the pedants) box if you don't need the subscription channels. This will just need a feed from the dish and a used sky box will be cheap.

For freeview you just need an aerial cable connected to the box.

I thought you could have up to four rooms with sky with multiroom?
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

    • How many Sky boxes can I have running from one dish? Your satellite dish can support up to eight "feeds" and the total number of boxes depends on the type you're using. Each Sky box/Multiroom box requires a single feed/cable from the satellite. Sky+ HD boxes each require two feeds/cables as they both allow you to watch one channel whilst recording another at the same time. Here are some examples of the types of combinations:
      • 8 standard Sky digital boxes showing live content
      • 4 Sky+HD boxes recording one show and watching another
      • 1 Sky+HD box and 6 standard Sky digital boxes

As shown by 'gravitytolls' above, you can have up to 8 boxes in various combinations. As you already have a Sky+ & a (I'm assuming) normal box,you have used up 3 of the 4 ports on the Quad LNB on the dish.
You can have one extra standard Sky box off your existing set up,ASSUMING your second box is a standard box,if not & you want either a standard box or Sky+ in for your mom, you'll need to get the Quad LNB swapped out for an 'Octo' (8) LNB.
As well as that, you need to have the extra boxes connected to the phone line.
A cheaper alternative would be to run a TV link of the second box into your mom's room, downside is she'll have to watch what you watch or you watch what she watches from that box.

Sorry to be a pedant, but whack a quattro on there with a headend and you can run as many as you like, I would always suggest a Zone 2 dish though.

Most Sky Installers wouldn't have a clue what a " Quatro LNB " is, let alone install one.;)
  • Thanks for all the responses. I will have to ask Sky to come and install the extra box though as dont have a clue myself.

I do have a spare Sky+ box I picked up from Freecycle a while back but never used, not sure if thats any use or will save us any money ??

How much am I looking at for the Sky installer to come and sort it out and how long will it take for this time of year ?

Any ideas anyone even rough guestimates?
    Thanks again.

It depends, your best bet would be to try the independents first, get a few quotes & compare them, the fact you have a spare box should cut down the cost.
You're looking for a Octo LNB to replace the Quad, run 2x coax feeds & phoneline.
I'm guessing you're looking around the £80-120 mark all in.

Even more of a pedant here. At least double the price of installing an octo lnb and unnecessary in most domestic installs. Also who supplies quattros that fit Sky minidishes (you quote zone 2) or would you have to have a bodged lashup? Quattros are only available and suitable for standard (non Sky) round dishes.

Sky will NOT install additional equipment they do not supply so you will need a local independent.
