sandbox is a kittie litter tray. all the crud is temporarily stored there and run in that space, leaving the rest of the computer untouched or unmodified. It is easily emptied, away should something go wrong... that is the theory.

The ones I have seen are not 100% foolproof and some virii and problems may still be transmitted into the untouched area.

another type of product done similarly by two companies is RETUNIL and COMODO TIME MACHINE. I will not rob you of the experience by googling and explaining them to you.

    Most likely.

OP. Why in particular do you want to use this? There may be alternative things you can do?

can you tell me what a sandbox is please? thanks :)

A Sandbox allows a program to be run where the windows registry and system files are all kept separate from the real Windows operating system. Any changes that take place are done inside the Sandbox which is just an area on the hard drive allocated as the Sandbox. The Sandbox can be emptied and anything that got into there from whatever means will be destroyed and the main Windows operating system files will be unaffected. You can actually browse the Sandbox and see which files are brought into it and any alterations which are made. I have examined the registry keys in a Sandbox to see what changes have been made by programs running in it.

Sandboxes and Virtual Machines cannot absolutely 100% separate the operating system from Malware, some of the more advanced Malware is constructed so that it can detect that it is running in a Sandbox or Virtual Machine and take action to break out of the Sandbox/VM. But that is fairly rare and highly unlikely to be a factor when browsing the internet. It's more of concern if you like to run cracks and other such software, then your playing a big gamble on whether it is benign or real Malware which could attempt to break out of the Sandbox. They usually do this by forcing an error exception (crash), it won't just happen with you totally unaware.

But for web browsing a Sandbox is much safer than running your browser un-Sandboxed and is highly unlikely to ever be compromised.

Sandboxie is the most well known Sandbox program. It does allow programs to be run with lower rights which should help protect the system in the event of it becoming compromised.

My browser, Firefox is running in a Sandbox ATM via Sandboxie with 116 tabs open courtesy of bartab/tabmix plus. I'll get around to reading them at some point. lol

I have tried Comodo firewall and thought it was absolutely terrible and I would never use it again. It's a work in progress with lots of work still to be done, by which time they will most likely start charging lots for it. So anyone using it is a beta tester.

There are a number of script extensions for Firefox, noscript is the most well know.
    YesScript to blacklist selected sites.
I have used Yesscript and it does not work!
I installed it to stop scripts running from betbrain.co.uk and added the site to it's blacklist. This is confirmed by a little icon showing a blackened script in the bottom right hand corner of my webpage whenever I am traversing betbrain.co.uk.
Despite this, it has made no difference whatsoever. I still get scripts running there which I have to stop manually when firefox asks me if I want to run them( quoting an unresponsive script such as Script: 'http://js.betbrain.com/javascript/standardutil201012101330.js:29')
    I have betbrain.co.uk, betbrain.com, js.betbrain.co.uk and js.betbrain.com in the banned list.
I have looked at reviews of yesscript which suggests that it is the bees knees but as far as I am concerned it is completely useless. Is there something I am missing here?
  • I don't use it so wouldn't know whether it works or not. It was just another such extension. There are different methods to execute scripts and some might get past simple script blockers.
