GUI stands for Graphical user interface - basically the pages you view when you visit http://192.168.1.254

As for flashing the firmware, o2 only give you limited access on flashing the router. Either they do it, or you do it using the rescue CD, even then you can only restore the firmware or upgrade the firmware.

So what ur basically saying is that there's no real chance to changing it back to the Thomson firmware?

I'm not 100% sure, but it might be possible.. let me google! :D

Edit: ok, basically found a couple of threads of people trying, but no results to if they got it working or not... so basically doesn't look good!

The O2 Box 2 (ie the wireless G one rather than the wireless N one given out on the top package) is a Thomson ST585v7 with custom firmware.

Although the settings for O2 LLU are different from those used by BTw based systems (ie the majority) O2 themselves have a BTw based offering (Access) so if they ship the same router for that and it isn't pre-configured there is a chance that the correct settings for a different ISP can be entered through the normal GUI. I don't have an O2 router any more and simply don't remember what options were available but it should be easy enough to check the setup pages to see what can and can't be entered.

I'm on access and just had a look, it's preconfigured for o2 broadband

  • For that model you will need to upload the original (non-o2) firmware using the JTAG connector inside the unit. Its not a simple task:

    What is JTAG: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joint_Test_Action_Group
Instructions for updating firmware via JTAG: http://download.modem-help.co.uk/utilities/JTAG/ (Your router is almost the same as the Alcatel instructions)
    Buy A Jtag Cable : http://www.digilentinc.com/Products/Catalog.cfm?NavPath=2,395&Cat=5&gclid=CPbO68io4aUCFQIOfAodzRg80g
    Make a JTAG cable: http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/downloads.php?do=file&title=how-make-jtag-cable&cid=25&ctitle=&id=197
    Firmware for your router: http://leoforeia.gr/thomson/Thomson_Firmware_Compilation/Firmwares/TG585v7/

We use OpenWRT to custom Flash linksys routers using a JTAG connector. If you have patience and time its a skill you can teach yourself using the utilities and information available online.

    NB:
Plusnet router is £25 - which is cheap but if you move away from Plusnet it is possible to upgrade their firmware back to normal (unlike O2)
    Or ... it's £39 for a new / decent wireless router http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linksys-Cisco-WAG120N-Wireless-N-
Router/dp/B00318BN54/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1291972029&sr=8-2 ) If you buy that you can use it with any ISP for as long as you like ..
In the world of internet customer service, it is important to remember your competitor is only a mouse click away.
