When you leave O2 they want the router back anyway or they'll charge you for it.

True as they did it to my hobby club, although they've just updated my router yesterday for a new one, and they've not asked for the old one back.
That's my mutt in the picture above.

Thanks for the replies guys, when I signed up for o2 broadband about 2 years ago they accidentally sent me 2 routers by mistake. They havent asked for the spare one back.

My friend wants to sign up for plusnet and asked me if I could borrow him the router.

So is it possible to use it with plusnet. is there any setting that will need to be changed?

    Thanks

If its a standard router via telephone line then all your friend needs to do is enter the relevant details in to the router but plus.net should offer a free router anyway.
  • It depends whether the settings are embedded into the router or not. Logging in and going to ADSL settings, if there is a username and password field, you can use it on Plusnet.

plus.net only offer a free router if you sign up to a contract. Otherwise you've got to pay £25 for it. Given the quality of their broadband, I'm sure glad I didn't sign up for a contract.
You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.

What router is it? Somewhere on the box will be a model number?

Unfortunately these days most ISPs provide routers that are locked to use their own firmware.
Getting around that is non-trivial (think in terms of opening it up, using a JTAG connector to extract the OS firmware image, editing it and re-uploading before finally being able to flash a generic firmware). Impossible to circumvent by normal firmware flashing means unfortunately.

However some ISPs routers will allow you to reset the firmware and if your is one of the ones that do, then you should be able to find the info here: http://www.modem-help.co.uk/
In the world of internet customer service, it is important to remember your competitor is only a mouse click away.

From memory of my O2days they use non standard VPI and VCI settings and do not have any user login. As it has custom firmware there is every chance that these settings can't be changed although if the same router is issued for O2 Access it must be possible. You may be able to reflash it with standard firmware. All I can suggest is that you check the GUI and see what options are available to you. A google search wouldn't go amiss either as this must have been asked somewhere before.

My O2 router was a Thomson Speedtouch 585v7

GUI stands for Graphical user interface - basically the pages you view when you visit http://192.168.1.254

As for flashing the firmware, o2 only give you limited access on flashing the router. Either they do it, or you do it using the rescue CD, even then you can only restore the firmware or upgrade the firmware.
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!
