    Debt-free and Proud!
I've been so looking forward to posting here!

The date of your lightbulb moment : March 2008
Debts at their highest : £79000
    Debt-Free Date : 25th July 2012
Your one pearl of wisdom. : Let somebody help you. I didn't realise my debt was half as high as it turned out to be and I was physically sick when I added it all up. I knew nothing about DMPs. So just went to my bank and told them the trouble I was in. They were no help at all except for giving me a piece of paper with Payplan's number on it. Having spoken to them and knowing I had a number to call made all the difference. I still lost a lot of sleep, dreaded the post, and it has been very hard (Though I have been very fortunate to have a job I enjoy that has been stable throughout). But I've made it :-)

Now my only debts are ones of gratitude some of which I can never repay. But I can say thanks here to all those on the Forum, especially those on the DMP Mutual Support Thread. Knowing other people had had similar issues and how they resolved them was great.

I've been looking forward to this moment since my LBM!

    Date of your lightbulb moment
Had my LBM towards the end of May 2011.

    Debts at their highest
    11k

    Debt-Free Date
    27th July 2012

    Your one pearl of wisdom.
Being financially savvy is something that you can learn. Previously I just spent until the bank wouldn't give me any more. I made big purchases because I *wanted* it, not because I could afford it. It took me a good couple of months to learn to stick to my new budget! I think my main advice is to learn the difference between NEED and WANT. If you're in debt and you don't NEED it, then put it back...

If you had a debt diary on DFW, a link to it

I'm going to be forever thankful to this site for getting me out of debt and giving me my life back. It's been a hard slog for the last year, but now I can smile again :)
    Debt-free 27th July 2012!

  • a. The date of your lightbulb moment - 6th November 2010. The date that I managed persuade Marbles to give me a year payment/interest free.
    b. Debts at their highest - £42,000
    c. Debt-Free Date - 30th July 2012
    d. Your one perl of wisdom - Sometimes the darkest days shine the brightest lights. Sometimes, take a step back in order to take a step forward. The worst day of my life turned into the best day as [although through defaulting] I took the power back with my debts and had negotiating power. No job meant that I could offer a "take it or leave it" offer that I would never have had the power to do.
    1st December 2010 - £29,200 Owed on Loans & Credit Cards
