Pearl(s) of wisdom - there are no quick fixes, but the slog is helped along with a spending diary, a SOA and a snowball. Oh and cut yourself a little slack from time to time, just don't get too used to the slack.

    No diary I am afraid.

Oh you have no idea how much I have wanted to make this particular post :D

Lightbulb moment - well, it had flickered for many years, but the full on halogen version happened in December 2006 when our credit limit was cut on a card that we were relying on to get us through Christmas.....

Debts at highest - just over £100k.....on top of a mortgage of £180k.

My debt free date - today 23rd December. Happy Christmas to me!!

My one bit of wisdom - never step away from MSE!!!! It is thanks to this site and the people that make it that I have gotten to this point. Search the boards, visit OS to make your budgets go further, apply for freebies to make your present buying go further, and above all, take full advantage of the support of the other posters - one way or another they are right there with you - to laugh, to cry, to rant, and to get you through even the darkest days.

Diaries - well, there are many - currently on chapter 13 of my journey.....head over to the diary board for the latest instalment as I now tackle my mortgage.....:D

Above all - just remember, there IS light at the end of that tunnel. I have proved it today.

Merry Christmas to you all, and especially to :money:and the team for creating this place :T

  • just made my last payment over the phone to MBNA. Apparently the payment will clear on Xmas day.

    Light bulb moment early 2007

    debts were £34k.

I went at it as hard as possible, made easier by not having dependents/mortgage etc. In the last year or 2 as my business started having surplus cash I could take out I thought it wasn't affecting me anymore, but the feeling when I knew I had enough to pay the last was amazing. A weight off I'd rationalised so much I almost didn't realise it was still there. It was though and I feel so elated to be out of debt.

Good luck to everyone, keep pushing to clear those debts and have a great Xmas

The date of lightbulb moment - our lightbulb moment was in April 2004.

Debts at their highest - the figure we started out with was £30,534.16 (but with interest and charges added at the start of our DMP, this figure went up to nearly £36,000:eek:).
Debt-Free Date - we have made today 01/01/11 our DFD as this is the first month without a payment to the CCCS.

Pearl of wisdom - whatever works for you, whether it be a spending diary, or freezing your cards in ice blocks, only you know what will work for yourself, oh and take help if it is offered, now is not the time to be proud (and I don't mean money, friends and family help out in many other sanity saving ways;)).
