HTC Desire HD

I've just ordered one of these from Orange on upgrade. Does anyone currently have one and could give me an outline of their experiences with it?

Orange have said its a phone that people either love or hate and have also said I can return it within 7 days if I can't get on with it.

I'm in the backlog queue for it so I've got to wait a week for it to arrive too - could do with it today given the Hero I currently have is on its last legs!

Also, my son upgraded on Orange to a DHD on Monday. Waiting for his views and to have a play myself at the weekend.
  • interesting. thanks for the replys. the battery issue does seem to be cropping up a lot and on that forum you mentioned hoofhearted they actually recommend not using a taskkiller which will be a new thing for me as i use it daily on the Hero! Many thanks.

Battery life is about in line with other Smartphones of similar specification. The technology progress is slow in this area, as it's currently a huge technical challenge to provide large power storage in a small form factor at any reasonable price point.

Android 2.2 does not require a Task Killer, Google removed the API calls to kill tasks, so they don't work well anyway. The OS manages processes and applications well without the need for 3rd party assistance.
  • I'm pretty certain of the getting the Desire HD even though there are lots of negative things about the battery life.

If you're using the phone to watch video's, go on the web, listening to music, of course your battery is going to go down. I have a similar thing with the IPhone 3GS but it doesn't bother me, I just charge it every night.

    I've a Desire HD

Out of the box, the battery life sucks!

But there are a few tweaks to make things last longer.

There are a few power management apps in the market that can shut of things like Wifi when you don't need it at much (like overnight) and to slow down the CPU when the screen is off. that will make a huge difference.

It does suffer from the "ooh! shiny toy" syndrome! you tend to play and use it more than usuall for the first week or so, that kills the battery and make it feel like it's not up to the task. But once you get used to it, and don't use it as much, you'll find the batter lasts a lot longer... ^_^

Since this is not a "Fruit Phone" ;) you can replace the battery, So give it till the start of January and their will be larger capacity batteries available from 3rd parties.

  • wow, well i've just uninstalled ATK after reading that forum.. lets see if it helps.

To be honest, it stays plugged in most of the day at my desk anyway. It's great for watching movies on the way to/from work, excellent for emails, web browsing, a few games

    Agreed.

Unless I specifically need them I keep wi-fi and 3G off but I still have to charge the phone every night. Even my wife's 3GS isn't that bad!
