Not sure if you'll get one for less than £200, but Curry's have an online 10% off offer this weekend...

I couldn't have got through my degree without my computer/scanner/printer...for a fact!
For my course, a laptop/computer and printer are both essential!

I have a lot of lecture and seminar notes that I need to print off on a daily basis, the university also strongly recommends that emails are checked on a daily basis, and then there is the small matter of coursework, which needs to be word processed.

Unless the library is on her doorstep, I'd certainly invest in a laptop for your daughter, will make things a whole lot easier.

Check out http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk they have some good deals on there, I'd have a browse at both the acers and toshibas, any of them will be more than sufficient for word processing and internet surfing. I doubt you'll get one for under £200, but certainly should find something in the £300-£400 range. It is definately worth paying the extra! You won't find anything good for under £200, and I'd be very weary of buying 2nd hand as laptops can wear and tear (depriciate) very quickly, unless you are clued up enough to run a full system check and open her up and assess the state of the components you are taking a big risk.

    Hey there,

As many have said here, a computer at uni these days is becoming a necessity and not a luxury. I had both in my first year but in the end gave up taking the laptop in favour of my desktop.

Laptops are, as people say, more easily moved from place to place, but that also means someone else can also remove them more easily from your digs. Students are regular targets of theft, and many of my friends had laptops taken. They might be insured, but does that get you back all the work you have failed to back up onto removable storage?

I would suggest a desktop rather than a laptop, more easily upgraded for hardware etc, less readily stolen and as they are not moved around less chance of accidental damage. Mine survived 3 years at uni and is still living, I am typing on it now. Desktops can be put together far more cheaply and you can choose to spend money on bits that you actually need to use. I built my own with very limited computer knowledge and a little experience of mecanno and lego, which is about all you need. There is plenty of help online on how to put a PC together and how to troubleshoot any issue as they arise. This could be a cheap way of getting a brand new computer rather than taking a chance on an ebay second.

Hope you find something and that your daughter enjoys uni

If a desktop is an option then buy one.

If not, buy a Dell Inspiron 1300 and if theft is an issue, some decent locks to chain it down to wherever it's being used.
