Am I missing something here but how have they made the connection that the computer name and IP address is actually yours?
Unless your computer name is Mr/Mrs/Miss MuddledIam who lives a few doors away?
Another thing how far is a few doors away?0 -
thanks all.
I feel terrible, they appear to be talking about hundreds of pounds, and they want the money back. Not sure what the Police can do. Im not good with computers and yes its more than possible when I have been messing around i have done something that i didnt know I had done. Its more the fact that i feel like everybody is talking about me. It may not even be me could be others especially if it was not secured. Its the fact this guy printed off their bill and had my computer name in black and white. I have checked my computer and cant find any history of logging onto another wifi connection.0 -
Is your computer name a common name?
Unless they look at your machine, they can't actually prove that the computer with the same name was actually your box. I can set my computer name to whatever I want. I can also change the MAC address.0 -

Is your computer name a common name? NO ITS A NICKNAME AND MY SON HAS MORE OR LESS THE SAME NICK NAME TOO.

Change your computer name now, and if the police knock on your door, then show them the changed name on your computer.
Unless they call in the computer forensic boys, you'll be in the clear.0 -
What are you supposed to have taken off them that costs Hundreds of pounds ...Sounds like either rubbish or someone is trying to scam you.
When you use the internet , lets say to download a film or buy something it requires a payment using a card.
The only way i could see is if they exceeded bandwidth and got charged. If they have left it open enough for you , or anyone, to log on then I can't see how you would be held liable. especially if you have your own internet connection.
You do have your own internet connection ?
Is your connection Wireless ?0 -
can they check a history though of computer name change ? Another question - the router has been taken away so if somebody logs onto the router .... what type of report do they actually see? I know it picks up IP address (i have been googling myself) what else does that modem report pick up. What do you see on the report? Thanks0

The business about "your IP address" is complete hogwash.
Your machine gets assigned an IP address by whatever DCHP server is operating on the network it connects to. If you connect to your ISP directly it will get a public IP address issuued by your ISP. If you connect to your router it will get a private IP address assigned by your router. Neither of these can possible be logged by his router which, if you did connect to it would have allocated your machine a private IP address.
It all sounds like complete baloney designed to frighten you into handing over some money to me.
Stand your ground and say that you have not knowingly connected to their network and if they want any compensation they'll need to offer proper proof that you have.
If this neighbour is smart enough to know exactly which machine was connected to his WiFi then imo he would have been smart enough to secure it.0 -
What are you supposed to have taken off them that costs Hundreds of pounds ...Sounds like either rubbish or someone is trying to scam you. THEY RECKON HOURS OF DOWNLOADS ASSOCIATED WITH MY COMPUTER NAME?
When you use the internet , lets say to download a film or buy something it requires a payment using a card. NOT ALL THE TIME, DEPENDS ON SITES AND YES I HAVE DOWNLOADED LOTS OF THINGS. OF LATE COUPLE OF FILMS, A SERIES AND JUST LOGGING ONTO MY USUAL WEBSITES EACH DAY, SKY SPORTS, BBC NEWS THAT TYPE OF THING.
The only way i could see is if they exceeded bandwidth and got charged. If they have left it open enough for you , or anyone, to log on then I can't see how you would be held liable. especially if you have your own internet connection. YES I BELIEVE ITS GONE OVER THEIR USUAL FEE BY HUNDREDS OF POUNDS.
You do have your own internet connection ? YES - BUT I HAVE 2 VERY CURIOUS LADS WHO DONT LIVE ME AND COME OVER EACH WEEKEND AND USE THE COMPUTER FOR HOURS AND I MEAN HOURS! I THINK I KNOW WHERE THIS IS HEADING !!!!
