When I had a problem with my boiler, which was a lot older than yours, I fitted a shower so that I had two alternatives. (This worked because I had a dishwasher.)

A friend recommended someone who came and fixed the boiler, which was as expensive as I feared - about £100 - but it worked well after that.

I'm struggling to see the connection here...
I assume that you mean you had an electric shower fitted as an alternative to hot water from the boiler? But that wouldn't help the OP in this situation if the incoming supply was also frozen-the electric shower would not work either.

Would I be right in guessing your boiler is in the loft or garage?
I was out to one with a frozen hot oulet pipe or cold feed pipe this week (or maybe both), gently defrosted them and it was working again.

yes even the hot pipes can freeze if in cold locations.
    (when the water is cold).

the wind chill factor can lower the temps to a freezing temp. easy.

There is running cold water, so I think a shower would work. Mine was plumbed in from the cold mains. Just suggesting it as a potentially cheaper option to get by, since he can't find anyone to come out.

all/nearly all electric showers are plumbed direct to the cold mains. so if the water is running the shower should work ok.
