Eclipse Broadband changing to LLU

I received a letter today stating they are changing to LLU from BT IPStream within the next few months and if I want my line excluded from the improvement programme I have to inform them by 15/11/06.

What are the pros and cons of switching?

Approximately 650,000 customers in the UK are already enjoying the benefits of LLU, including customers of AOL, Bulldog Communications Ltd, Cable & Wireless, BSkyB-Easynet, Energis, NTL-Telewest, Tiscali and Wanadoo UK plc.

Is LLU covered in the Ofcom Migration Code of Practice (CoP)?

Currently, LLU does not fall within the CoP. A trial of the LLU to IPStream migration process is presently underway with our LLU service provider and BT. The target for launch is October/November 2006. This is subject to the success of trials and agreement within the ISP industry on the process thereafter. We will keep our customers informed of the progress on this page over the coming months. This means that at present, if you decide to move to another ISP, you will have to cancel your Eclipse account and re-order a new service with another ISP.

Can a Migration Authorisation Code (MAC) be issued?

If the LLU transfer process has begun or has been completed, we are unable to:
  • return you to your old IPStream service; or
  • give you your MAC at present due to the lack of a formal proven migration process established between these services

Eclipse don't seem too keen to announce who is providing the LLU service for them  maybe they have something to hide.

I'm sure I read on ADSL guide a lot of people claim that it in many areas it's provided by Tiscali.

Tiscali don't have a very good reputation .

I got this letter too at work so I would be interested in people's opinions and thoughts.

If it was me and I was happy with the service as it is and given Tiscalis reputation then I would definitely opt out ,if I wasn't happy with the current set up I'd migrate out which I did earlier this month ( Eclipse to Entanet ) it does cost me another £5 per month but I've been with Entanet for over 3 weeks and I haven't suffered any peak time speed issues like I had while with Eclipse.

Again if I was in your position my biggest worry would be if I was to try the LLU and it was no good I could end up having to cancel the service and wait for the marker to be taken off my line then have to pay £47 to sign up with another ISP ( around 2 to 4 weeks with no broadband ) although this might be nothing to worry about if the LLU to IPStream migration process gets going.
