Just out of interest, OP, where do you spend your days? Are you shivering in a freezing cold house while you work too?

Two of you should grow up and just reach a more sensible and amicable solution. It is stupid not to continue to use the central heating during the day if it is going to be used (please remember all the threads about 'is it cheaper to have it on timer' do not say that the extra expense is not worth the extra money) - I would suggest a 55 - 45 split if you don't want 50-50. Although a 10% difference may seem too small to you I doubt it is - remember kick-starting the house from cold evening and morning is non-trivial. You also benefit from clothes drying more quickly. And, in summer, someone being at home during the day to air and dry the house will cut need for any evening heating. You should also discuss the temperature - if you do have the heating on all day then a slightly lower temperature can be used.

Anywhence, if you are a bloke and she is not a bloke then it doesn't matter how long the heating is on for - your perceptions of temperature will be competely different and you would each still be harrumphing and sneaking round the thermostats even if it were on evenings only. All men's heating bills escalate when womans get involved. It's an immutable natural law.

I think actually your flat mate is a liar and you don't trust her and in the longer term I would look to live elsewhere.

In the shorter term she should pay more if she is at home with the heating on all day and by all means try negotiations and discussions which are the best way forward if at all possible, but hard if someone is lying to you.

If she works from home then you shouldn't really have agreed to share the cost equally now should you.

Over the past few years there must have been a score of threads on this theme.

e.g. One person has boyfriend staying overnight from time to time and they use more heat, water, cooking and other such trivia.

    I shower - he/she takes baths etc.

If it bothers you, have it out with her - or move out!

However do you seriously expect someone to be home all day in a cold house?
