Is it possible it cost almost £2 between 8 - 9am to heat the place? We have two bedrooms but it isnt double glazed.

    Yes, absolutely!

edit - sorry, misread. £2 in an hour...no!

If left on all day, yes. I think your suspicions are correct...
  • Is there any way to prove my suspicions more accurately?

Just out of interest do you share the electricity costs as well? Surely using an electrical heater all day is costing you more in electric than having the gas central heating on? It normally costs more to heat a home with electric than gas.

Do a sneaky meter read when you leave for work and see how much is left when you get back! (Read the meter not the money).

Look at the money at 6pm, and the next morning at 8am. You know how many hours it was on overnight, since you are there.

If someone is working at home in the current low temperatures I'm not surprised that some additional heating is required. If it bothers you that much then why not negotiate that flatmate pays more e.g. 60% on the grounds of being at home most of the day. Seems better than worrying about someone deciding to be comfortable.
  • As others have said check the meter before and after you leave the house that way you can validate the heating is being used when your not there and then suggest that you pay less then your flatmate who is in the home all day.

An electric heater on for 10 hours will cost £2.
What a way to live though watching the bills like that. Surely if you are out at work someone else is paying to heat that place for you to keep you cosy so splitting the cost of keeping your house bearable isn't too bad.

Why did the flat mate have to lie about it? Surely she should have known she would be caught out??!!
