    The one's on the tomsgadgets link above don't need to be plugged in to use. They have a battery and record the temperature every X number of minutes. You then plug it in and download the data.

    Just to reassure the OP. I have one of the loggers appearing on tomsgadgets (Lascar EL-USB 1) and haven't had any problems using it with XP and now Windows 7 64bit. The battery is a bit of an unusual size but easy enough to find online.

    You do get ip based room thermometers (climate control monitor), we used them at work in our data centres. Much more than £500 though.

    Exactly what I thought and was about to post! Cheapest option as well I would of thought!
