sad - rabbit put down

Hi

I've not been living at my parents now for 5 years, but I had a rabbit who was 8.5 years old. My dad was happy to look after it sinced I moved out.

For the past week or so 'daz' my white rabbit was unable to move around the hutch without falling over. Everytime he fell down someone had to pick him up. He found it hard to eat and drink by himself, but was doing so being hand fed and holding the bottle for him.

My parents had had him in doors since they found him laying down in his hutch and were feeding him and looking after him.

My dad took him to the vets yesterday and he has been put down. The vet said it was some type of brain damage. We assumed a stoke.

I know he was an old rabbit but I've been so emotional about this since yesterday.

I couldn't expect anyone to hand fed him thou.

He was the most well bahaved rabbit you could ever wosh for. He used to run around the garden and not even try to escape.

its just that I could never bring myself to take an animal to the vets to be put down.

I can't guartee myself that he was in lot of pain, just falling over unbalanced.
  • It's awful when you lose a pet, heartbreaking.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I have owned many dogs, cats and rabbits in my life time and as heart wrenching as it is the most selfless act of kindness you can do for any animal that you love is to hold them in your arms as they are given sleep to prevent suffering.
A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I agree with sarabe - it is the one thing all pets deserve - to be put out of their misery if they are suffering, no matter how heartbreaking it is for the owner xxx

Exactly. It is the time to prove we think more of our beloved pet than ourselves.Leaving them to suffer until they die is just not fair on them.Thank god vets are allowed to do it.

Your rabbit had a very good life and a decent end. There are many animals that don't have either.Grieving is normal.Just because you gave it a blessed release doesn't mean you should feel any less sad than if it had died naturally.

but how can I be sure that he was in pain. Just cos it was falling on its side when trying to walk round. It was eating and drinking with help.

I'm trying to think that the vet wouldn't put an animal down if their was something he could do for it. They don't become a vet for that. Its probably the worse part of the job. The fact that he had a good and long life just makes me feel even more upset that he's not still here.

IT doesn't seem 2 minutes since I bought him
