Make sure you inform the DVLA correctly (of it being scrapped) and in writing by recorded+signed for post!!!!
Can you/should you inform the DVLA it's been scrapped if you have not actually scrapped the car yourself?

^^ You still have to inform them that you've passed the car on and deal with the paper work correctly.

Not if you do what i said in my earlier post#8, when you scrap the car at a registered scrappy they will issue you with an end of life certificate, this is all done on computer (linked to the DVLA) in front of you and is your proof that the car has been scrapped. If you do it this way then you dont have to do anything else at all.

They will collect, If they want the logbook make sure you fill the right section in and send it off yourself.
Dont let them do it in case they resell the vehicle. Bought cars from the scrapyard with nothing wrong with them.

If you sell your car to a scrap dealer, then is it not then theirs to do as they wish?

    Spot on correct.;)
  • I bet half the ones that advertise in the back of the local free papers aren't even scrappies. They'll come and take your car away for £50 then they'll take it to a real scrappy and get £100 for it. Or even sell it on for more depending on what needs doing. ;)
  • if its a complete car they will probably give you 50 if you take it your self you may get 100
unless it small i think scrap is about £80 - £100 a tonne at the moment

Not if you sell it to them on the basis of selling the car for scrap, its not iilegal but its not clear and fair from them either.

It is the registered keepers responability to make sure the dvla know of any changes to the status of the car full stop, if you sold it for scrap and someone used it to drive around in the registered keeper would still be liable for fines tax etc

considering there is no such thing as a end of life cert ;)
Or as we call them round here, scrappies or posh folks may call them vehicle dismantlers.

indeed, ive never called myself a atf before! but not every scrappy will have a waste management licence and that is what you need to be able to issue COD's

It's complex isn't it... years ago we just used to get our car towed/driven to the scrappy's door and leave it there to be discovered when they next opened up. Job done.

Don't cash in the tax just yet. Scrappies will pay more if you take it to them yourself. Once you've parked up in their car park, then you remove the tax disc and cash it in.
