Advice on affordable carpet?

Hi all
We have to replace an old carpet in our living room and I really need some guidance on where to find a decent replacement. Unfortunately my other half doesn't want to budget more than about £250-300, which I fear will only get us something horrible.
Has anyone recently done this 'on a budget' and not ended up with a hideous mess? I've just had it drummed in to me that carpet is something you should never, ever do 'on the cheap', but OH is (a) no sensitive to these things and (b) paying. Yes, I've offered to pay the extra, but he says it's coming out of the same pot, I can't afford it, etc.
I've looked in all the obvious places - Allied, Carpetright etc but so far anything I would consider acceptable comes in at around the £550 mark. A few of the cheaper ones are probably OK cosmetically, but they feel really scratchy and are generally thin. Are there any good deals on thicker, less pricey carpets out there that I'm missing??
NB it has to be carpet because we are in an upper flat with poor soundproofing and it's also rather draughty so carpet is the best option. Also the floorboards are not in a good state.
Thanks so much for any advice!

Hi - we carpeted our lounge at this time last year. Was on a budget and tried all the obvious showrooms.
Went to a local independent warehouse on a trading estate.
Managed to get a Highland Twist 80% wool heavy wear carpet size 5.8 x 4m - for £250. Think I was quoted about £275 and asked him for discount for cash which he did.
Got the underlay off Tradepriced - very good site and the fitter laid underlay and carpet and supplied gripper and door bars for £60.
HTH
BTW - The carpet still looks like new a year on and with heavy traffic0 -

How many sq metres are we talking about and where are you based?
I had my through lounge and diner done a year ago with a inexpensive carpet at £7.99 per sq yard and proper 10mm foam underlay for £2.75 per sq metre and it still looks great. So much so just had all upstairs done in same carpet for same cost with a bit of discount after a haggle.
Again, small independent carpet place based in an old mill. The owner was a fitter and has 30 years experience who's gone on his own with very low overheads. I'd recommend him to anyone and would never use a carpetright or allied place again.0 -
Sorry Ormus couldn't help myself
but do you think Carpetright will finally have a proper sale?
Can't wait.
Was in there today and the guy had a fresh pile of sale stickers sat on the desk ready to put out... so business as usual really!Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -
Try this company, quite new, they are doing a decent range of carpets each priced at just £6 per sqm including delivery and you can request free samples if you want to try before you buy !
