How to make CHEAP look EXPENSIVE! (merged)

Sorting through my wardrobe as per 'february is use up month' looking for different things to wear, it struck me that it might be fun to find out how old items of clothing are that are still regularly being worn.

I have a thermal vest from Pippa Dee that must have come from one of their parties in the late 70's / early 80's. It makes a regular appearance every winter and is still in perfect condition - I picked it in from the washing line at 4pm today!!

Incidentally I've discovered that it was George Davis of Next, George at Asda and Per Una, who ran Pippa Dee :happyhear :happyhear

I still have a armless jacket that my nana made me about 10 years ago and I still wear it in the summer as I can't do it up over my chest. Its black and white and had a big red heart on the back :rotfl:

What a nice idea for a thread.
Every time I put on my HJ Indestructible socks bought in the 1960s I marvel at what fantastic value they have given. Only one sock out of 8 pairs has needed darning!

  • I have a thin cotton jumper with dalmatians on it that I was given when I was 15, so that would be 1990. My fell-walking boots are about the same age.
Still wish I could buy a TARDIS instead of a house!

I have one of those 'grandad' white shirts, the type without a collar.

It was very old when I acquired but I'm guessing it goes back to the 1950's or even earlier.

The label says "Henley" REGD, A "Fieldwear" Product and under that label is another which says "Sanforized" Shrunk Fabric.

It has three buttons on the front (down to a square bib) and button holes either side of the collar and a button hole at the back of the collar............presumably for the separate collar to fasten onto.

    I have a cardigan from M & S that was my Grandads.

I pinched it from the 'charity pile' my Nan made when he died in 1987. It might sound morbid to some but its a kinda 'comfort cuddle' from him when I'm all sad and miss him. I lived with my Grandparents so he was my 'dad' to me.

Although it does smell of comfort now and not old spice :D

LOL - we've had this thread before but I forget who won with a jacket that was made in the 1800's and was passed from generation to generation. It started as a full length coach coat and is now jacket length if I remember correctly.

I've recently purged my wardrobes and scrapped anything not worn in the last 12 months so most of my oldies have gone so most of my working wardrobe is under 10 years old with the odd old faithfull clocking up a couple of decades. My mothball wardrobe houses my prized collection of 1980's about town wear, heavily featuring the eight pleat high-waister trouser (watch any Spandau Ballet video to refresh your memory), outrageously pointed shoes that I probably cannot walk in now and a retina burning, vivid assortment of waiter length jackets with shoulder pads you could land a plane on in various shiny/sheeny fabric that will never decompose. LOL They will come back into fashion on day and when they do I'm ready. Now where did I put that bottle of Hai Karati

At christmas Wilkinsons where selling New Hai Karati. I kid you not. So you can still get at certain times of the year.

:rotfl: Like Denim and Blue Stratos what ever happened to them.

The oldest thing in my wardrobe is a Black and white jumper from tescos that I wear if nothing else is clean and that is from about 1993 ish.

well when i came to scotland nearly 7 years ago i had to fit my entire life into two suitcases, a carryon bag and a large handbag BUT i've still got 2 pairs of denim shorts and a slinky dressing gown that came with me from the states

they must be at least 12 years old.. i don't get rid of clothes until they die or they just don't suit me/fit me anymore

the shorts are a bit tight right now but i still wear the dressing gown regularly

  • We have a family M&S women's nightshirt we think was bought in the early '70s which has been worn every winter is now on its 5th owner! It's becoming a joke and we're thinking about recommending the fabric to NASA.
