I had already paid and also want to stay with them, it seems they all charge a call set up fee to mobiles.

The charge is for connecting to another network, after BT has connected you to that network they have no idea whether the call was answered or not.

So they would have no idea how long the answered call lasted and how much to charge you. Not a very good business model!
BT has to pay the other network for connecting to their system, simples.
Not quite. BT pays the other network for terminating the call. Only answered calls are terminated.

Good points, its not good business and I said to the operator if he went home that night to think about how ludicrous it is. Not to mention bad businees.
I have found after ages searching the term "set up fee" (apt as I feel set up!!!!!!) to describe all these that don't get talked about. Its on PDF hidden well and in tiny print. SDo tiny their staff do not know. I asked another while I was on today and he said my line must have a fault as I do not get charged for a call that does not connect.

I've not checked lately, but I thought that 18185 didn't charge if the call wasn't connected (though since that disagrees with an earlier poster perhaps I'm wrong on that?). If they do charge it'll only be about 11p.

Two calls today via 18866 to an unanswered Orange PAYG mobile. No charge. Which is the way telephone networks are designed to work and how it should be. No termination - no charge.

Do they update call charges immediately then?

So are they acting illegally then?

18866? Usually it is very quick to update. Within minutes.

The network on which the call terminates signals an answered call and charges BT. BT take this information and use it to charge you. If the other network has made a mistake I'm unsure what BT can do about it but it is hardly a fault which can be laid directly on BT.

Sign up I use it for all calls even BT free evenings and weekend's connection charge is more then the 4p. Plus with 18185 you can talk to somebody day or night and for hours and its free if a UK call.
I call my family in Ireland and its 1p a minute, chaper than a daytime call to my own city (BT)
Its marvellous, we all automatically dial it in. :j
Just discovered this useful information. My landline is with TalkTalk. Does the 18185 service only work with BT? Many thanks.

It was only BT but others have been added, some charges like my Irealand calls are 2p instead of 1p but still compares favourably to most provider charges. Get your connection rates at Talk talk and compare, then you just dial in the number on the ones that save you and use talk Talk for the ones that are free.
