    No charges to open it.

They'll ring round your Direct Debits and swap them over for you.
They will send you a letter confirming the details of the Direct Debits they get from your old bank. You then ring them to update or clarify these.

Let them do the work but it's worth ringing round to make sure the companies you have DD's set up for have your new details. (They missed one of mine).

will my original cash card still work then?
  • If you are just transfering from a Standard Halifax Current Account to a High Interest Rate Current Account then yes you keep the same account details and cards. At least thats what I was told when I phoned up to switch. I only sent the form off a few days ago so can only take their word for it.

And no, their aren't any fee's monthly or annually.

so, if the details all stay the same, card, etc, why do DD's need to change, or is lions21 miss informed on this matter?

I think lions thought you were moving current accounts from one bank to the next, whereby the direct debits would need to be switched. But since you are staying with the same bank it won't happen.

However if you want to be 100% certain just ring up and ask, but when I phoned up and asked they told me everything would stay the same - cards and account numbers and according to the form it only takes 7 days to do from when they've recieved it.

You don't have to ring and ask .. if you're upgrading from a Halifax current account to the High interest one - it's totally painless. The account details stay precisely the same so cheque book / debit card / DDs / SOs etc - all remain working as previously. Nothing changes fundamentally - other than the interest rate

If you use online banking - you will simply see the title of the account change on your Portfolio. And that's it ;)

But for anyone considering an 'upgrade' within Halifax accounts. It's a lot easier just dropping into a Branch to do it. As they simply print off an A4 acceptance sheet which you sign (both for joint accounts). It's a lot easier (and safer) than the application form - which rather stupidly is not really geared to internal customer upgrading. Unless they've changed it since I did mine a couple of months ago.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
