Monthly Tariffs / No 12 month contracts

I'm thinking about getting the Sim Online 200 Extra sim only tariff from the O2 website (400 cross network anytime mins and 1000 text/media messages for £30 a month) but I can't decide whether to get the monthly subscrition which lets you cancel the contract at ANY time with only 30 days notice or to sign up for the same tariff for 12 months. I rang O2 and they said there was no difference and even if they stop doing that tariff even if I'm signed up to the monthly contract they can't take it off me, as it would be if I signed up for a year.

Seems to good to be true. I'd appreciate hearing what any of you thought.

The answer is obvious, ie you go for the shortest tie-in period possible.

A friend of mine suggested that having a shorter tie in might affect any possible upgrade. I think that might well be the case but the way I see it you're in a far better bargaining position when out of contract.

If your contract is running on a monthly basis and it has no minimum period, then it is unlikely that you would become eligible for a 'free' upgrade anyway. Upgrades normally only come about when you are prepared to comit for a minimum of 12 months.

You're right but at least with not being tied to a contract means I can take advantage of any other offers to 'newbies' which normally includes a free phone anyway. Can you think of any other reason why not signing a 12 month contract might be of a disadvantage to me?
