Please do not put refridgerated food in random places not in the fridge when shopping

Options
Ok so this is a bit of a rant but something people may not already be aware of.

I work in a large shop and people are always leaving sandwiches/salads/other chilled food out of the fridge, ie they pick up a sarnie for lunch, change their mind and put it on a random non-food-non refridgerated shelf. Under our rules (and I guess every other shop) we HAVE to throw it straight in the bin and put it through as a loss, as we do not know how long it has been out of the fridge.

I've noticed this in other stores such as tesco too where people have dumped their 'yellow stickered' items on a random shelf behind loads of stuff, so it doesn't really get a chance to be sold, so it gets chucked.

I think it's very sad when food has to be thrown away when people are starving, we waste enough food and many shops throw away their leftovers, but at least please please think of your actions when shopping and do not just throw it on any shelf, chances are it will have to be binned, I think this is really selfish. If you can't be bothered to put it back, it would be better to pass it to a sales assistant and ask them to put it back, at least it has a chance of being sold and consumed.

Thanks.

That really bugs me too, especially when it's frozen and/or expensive like steak or half a big salmon.

How lazy can you be? If I ever decide I don't need something, I hand it to the checkout assistant and say 'I'm sorry, but I've realised that I don't need that anymore, but don't want to just leave it rotting in the aisles' if I can't go and put it back myself. They always comment about how happy they are that I don't just leave it behind the cereals/tins of soup etc., so everyone's a winner! :)

  • I normally have my three year old with me when going round the supermarket so getting something back to where it orginally came from is sometimes a bit of a trek. However, I would always put a refridgerated item in the nearest fridge, likewise with frozen items in the nearest freezer. :)

This is after years of working on a checkout and often seeing food passed to the checkout operators being left to rot because there was no-one around at busy times to take it back to the right areas.

I've noticed that my local supermarkets seem to have 'gophers' who run back with the things (although I've only noticed this in the past few years), but I think your approach is very considerate. I guess the only potential downside is if the staff start thinking 'Well, that could have been nearly defrosted before it was put back in there, so we should throw it anyway and not take the risk', but I wonder if they would or not?

I hate this too. I also used to work in a supermarket. I'd seen people dump hot chickens out of the deli on random shelves, and put ham that they'd have had to queue for, also from the deli, been dumped in a freezer. I also see plenty of empty drink bottles or tins on shelves when doing my shopping, so i'm assuming people are drinking stuff before they get a chance to pay for them.
  • so who is doing this?

Non-MSErs, perhaps? Or people with a grudge against the supermarket(s)? ;)

  • One mine and my OH's pet "loves" to hates lol

We've spotted a toddler stair gate in the cereal section (actually balanced on the cereal boxes) - what was it, Oh we just can't afford this if we're to get your Frosties too?? , reduced veg in the bedding section (tucked under some sheets), frozen meat rapidly defrosting on the bread & cake shelves, chilled cream in the baked beans and even a (presumably by the smell) used rolled up nappy in the reduced fridge.

Now as most if not all supermarkets have a baby change (this one does) then the last is just disgustingly gross, unhygenic and antisocial - we told the greeter and they immediately arranged for someone to discard the entire contents of that fridge. Were some good bargains there but somehow I just didn't fancy them...

The rest we regard as baffling at best and sheer laziness/couldn't care less about other people at worst! :(

If I was the manager of that shop i'd have had a look on the security cameras to see if I caught whoever did it - and i'd have banned them from the shop. That's just disgusting.
