probable redundancy

I've been called in today and told my job may be made redundant. they said that today was the first of three meetings and that the next one (friday coming) will be to discuss possible other job roles within the company. To my mind there are no possible job roles in the company but they have asked me to have a think. Then there will be another meeting the friday after (just before we break up for christmas-nice) when they wil make a decision.
My first thoughts are that they are having the meetin g to discuss other employment options to cover themselves. this is a very small company and if there were any options I would know about them. they gave me a new contract about 3 weeks ago but I have not signed it. They have said in the past that it does not need to be signed to be legally binding, but surely thats not right?
To be honest I havent read the contract yet but until this afternoon I didnt think there was any great rush. I'm sorry this is so long but I have no experience of this and I really need some help.

I would have a read of the new contract to see what was changed.

It was not a good idea to ignore it, by doing so you have in effect been agreeing to the changes by working under them, you can refuse to accept changes if you are not happy with them.

The company are consulting which is good a lot don't.
You need to look at any ideas that can avoid redundancy not just other jobs but keeping the one you have, what are the reasons for the redundancy are they valid or can you see ways to make them invalid arethere any other option like evereyone taking a cut to avoid redundancies, short term short working anything you can think of.
Are any other being considered as well as you or should there be if not.
  • thanks so much. i'm just in total shock at the moment wasn't really expecting this. i did ask if others were being looked at and they said yes and they told me which depts but obviously not who. i wonder whether i could go along the line that my role is still needed, which in all honesty i think it is, but my gut feeling is that they want to get rid of my role and make it part of somebody elses. so they save on my salary and give somebody else more duties. to be honest my head is screwed at the mo just trying to get another opinion. thank you so so so much for your help x

I know it takes time to sink in, been there a few times before and not been on the safe side twice.

Sleep on it and have a good think.

If finance is an issue and they are trying to cut cost and you think it is genuine then you have to accept that changes are going to happen.

The trick is to use the consutation to try and get the best for yourself.

If you think the role is still needed then no reason not to try justify your own existance in the role, the may be something that has been overlooked.

If combining two roles then you need to be told and if you could you do that role then it might be there should be a pool for selection.

Personly I think before the holiday is a good time to bring this sort of thing up, you have time to adjust spending plans just in case it is not good.
  • Just to confirm that a contract like this does NOT need to be signed (took advice from the Confederation of Small Businesses some months ago on roughly this subject).

  • thanks for all your replies, I really can't believe how nice and helpful people are on here!
I've taken a days holiday, my dad is on his way over (he used to be a personnel manager) and he's going to go through it all with me so I'm ready for the meeting Friday.
On a lighter note, i feel happier than ever cos I just had a letter saying that I've had the all clear from a fairly serious medical condition I've had. Makes me realise that a job is just a job and health is so much more important!!

Medical condition....Cynic comes out in me.

Have you told the employer about this and have you had a longish period of absence in the past year?

Same here because if they are combining two roles and there is a possible pool for 1 job they will take sickness into account . If it was a long period they should look at a specific time , ie if you have 90 days off certified they should just count 30 of those.

At least your better thats what counts.

Well that wasn't really where I was going with it, I was going with them trying to get rid of the OP because of unreliableness and if this is the case they need to be very careful!

They don't have to only count 30 days but it maybe deemed a reasonable adjustment under the DDA to ignore some of the absense due to a disability (if this applies)

  • I can see where you're coming from but no, I haven't had a lot of time off with it. Without going into too much detail as its quite personal, it's been dealt with by hospital appointments. would have been more of a problem in future years if I hadn't had the all-clear. I only mentioned it as it put things into perspective for me and was a bit of good news in an otherwise miserable week! and I don't believe that it is any way connected with the redundancy. :)
