  • If I were you, next contact you have with the bank, if it's not positive you should tell them that this has been dragging on to slowly and that if it's not sorted in 14 days you are referring it to the FSA and then the ombudsman. That should make them get their finger out.

I really sympathise as I've been a victim of identity theft also, by a girl I knew well, and in my case the only 'security check' they did was ask her my mother's maiden name and my date of birth and she got almost £4k out of that!

In my experience it took less than 14 days to get a copy of the cheque and it proved nothing. A decent attempt at my handwriting and signature (she had written herself cheques to cash) but it wasn't me. The police gave me a crime ref no but my bank dragged it out so long (like yours are) lots of vital evidence was lost (like CCTV in the shops she was using my cheque book).

Please please keep on at your bank and threaten them with the FSA, keep in touch with the police and if neccessary go to the Ombudsman (all you have to do is fill in a form and they contact the bank which is usually enough to scare them).

GOOD LUCK and keep us posted. It makes me so angry we have to do the bank's job for them!

One tip I read about keeping yourself safe from things like this was to invent a fake maiden name for your mum and tell nobody what you've done. Too many people know what the actual maiden name is, this way you're the only person who knows it. They never ask for proof of the maiden name when setting up the security, just the actual name.

Having said that, I sat in a bank the other day and he asked me for my security details. I could see the screen and could see that the work details were out of date (I'd changed companies). Yet when I gave a completely different work name and address (the new one) he didn't bat an eyelid and passed me through the security checks and let me access the account!!!!! I called the manager over and explained what had just happened. They don't give a sh*t and don't seem to even care when the security details aren't met. It's no wonder stuff like this can happen.

Keep posting OP, I'm wondering what will happen with this one. Hopefully you can prove it was cashed into an account you don't own and you'll get it back....
