You won't be able to do much with the cheque. I agree with Mikeyorks - if you did not write this letter then take it along to your local police station as soon as possible.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

i noticed a couple of people have suggested the same i just thought the police might also say i had to at least have a copy of the cheue before they could do anything as like i have said before it all looks so unlikely that they may also believe it was paid into my account and that i may have forgotten. thought they may take it more seriously when i can hold up copy of cheue and say it has nothing to do with me. bank will only advise police to wait for copy of cheue. this i have seen happen myself when i worked at bank nothing was really acted on until copy of cheue proved it went into an account not owned by the customer0 -
after thinking over what you all have said have decided i will call police tomorrow, even if it is just to get their advice at this stage. i guess i was scared before they would act like the bank and not believe me till i had more proof. but at least calling them for advice will get me a crime number and show bank my intentions of not doing anything. plus will look better that didnt wait too long to contact them and give them all a reason to think it suspicious that i didnt contact them sooner. will do tomorrow when all staff more available and not just a skeleton amount to dela with emergencies. i will post on here after i have spoken to them to let you all know whats what. and a big thanks again to everyone on here for all your posts i dont know where i would be without my mse people to rely on for help and supprt on so many matters. keep the good work up. i consider you part of my extended family as i have no real extended family and you cant always burden husband and kids with everything0

Seeing as how there are, thus far, only 25 postings on this thread, it might be an idea to print it off for the police to read?
It does explain, I think, why you didn't contact them absolutely immediately.0 -
You don't have to wait until tomorrow to call the Police. They wil have just as many staff working on a Sunday as any weekday. You will not get any contact from a Police Officer at this stage as it will all be dealt with by a civilian but they will start the ball rolling.
Most Police Forces have a local rate 'Non Emergency Number', they will take all the details and start the crime report over the phone. The crime number will be given to you at the end of the call.
Hope you manage to get to the bottom of this and ultimately get your money back.0 -
There is no-one more suspicious than me and from what I have read here so far it seems very unlikely that this money has been taken by someone you know(too risky) or someone at the BS (too hamfisted). Whoever has done this knows your handwriting, name address and can intercept your mail. Am I the onlyone thinking POSTAL WORKER?
(No offence to postal workers 3 of my best friends are postmen).
Here's hoping this all works out.FREE THE WM30 -

No;)Post #16.Been involved with a lot of cheque fraud - and most was initiated via mail intercepts.
But I've also learned that the unexpected .. is often to be expected, in these cases. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
i did call the police today and was put through to the investigations dept. they asked lots of uestions and then said they thought it was someone who had intercepted my post. she feels they must have got hold of a statement of account as thye were able to quote the account number and the exact amount that the investment was worth. i have been given a crime number and she is going to send me a form i need to fill in to authorise her to contact them and discuss my account. at least she took the whole thing seriously and sounded as though she believed me. i just need to wait now for copy of cheque but at least i now have the police on board too, will keep you all updated0
