Thanks Paul T. The link you sent mentions Outlook Express, Windows Mail and Thunderbird but not Outlook.
Does anyone know if Outlook is supported? The configuration looks very similar to Outlook Express.0

Outlook will certainly do IMAP, you may just have to adapt the Outlook Express settings to suit.0

virginmedia uses gmail as their web mail, when you 'delete' using outlook using IMAP the email will go in the 'All Mail/archive' folder on the server, if you want to delete it forever don't delete it in outlook just 'move' it to the servers 'Bin' folder, no need to purge anything.
follow this guide for setting it up in outlook (replace the gmail settings for the virginmedia ones) http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=77689
then read this for recommended client settings http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892
follow that to the T and you will be seen right.0
