Windows Phone 7 anyone? (e.g. HD7 or Omnia 7)

I have one of these as an upgrade to a Windows Mobile 6.1 phone, but am seriously thinking of returning it because my old phone seems far more useful and easier to use.

What am I missing?

Oh well, it seems no-one on MSE has any penchant for Windows Phone 7 either, so I've returned the thing :p

I've never known anyone happy with windows mobile 6.1, it is the worst operating system I've used on a phone. It isn't designed for touch screen mobiles in mind and many of the buttons require a finger the size of a tip of a babies little finger nail to actually do what you want them to do.

Windows 7 is a complete revamp and from the brief play I had with one, it seems Microsoft were on their way to actually producing a mobile phone operating system which actually looks like it's designed for a mobile device.

Was tempted but gone with an Android operating system backed phone.

Yes I agree Windows Phone 7 is easy to use as a phone, and it's pretty and slick, but as a connectible computer it has been locked down like a Tesco Wines & Spirits aisle on a Sunday evening :p - there ain't no way you're going to get any strong stuff out of it without a smash and grab, or hanging around for an age, waiting for the next open session

I still say Windows 6.1 as an intuitive operating system for a connectible device was pretty interesting for anyone familiar with basic tools like Windows Control Panel and File Explorer.

OK, as a touch screen phone it needed a poke with a sharp stick, but if I had a 1GHz chip in mine I'd still be planning to keep using it for another year or so until Windows Phone 7 is opened up for real smartphone use.
  • I'm off the track in the new high-tech toys, is to create a lightweight windows 7? (Lighter than Windows 7 start putting on smaller laptops). I'd be interested in a comparison between him and an iPhone. I have an old Samsung Blackjack 1 with windows on it and it's OK at best. Just curious about the technology I think from the windows of my phone is not comparable to a computer operating system.
  • I've had an LG Optimus 7 for a couple of weeks now and love it. I've come from using a Nokia E71 so it's really my first proper smart phone and I find it very intuitive - I sync'd my gmail account, google calendar and facebook really easily. I've played with an android phone and iPhone and personally prefer the Windows 7 phone operating system. You can't customise it very much, the limited ringtones suck and there aren't many apps yet (plus the ones that are there already seem pretty expensive) but they marketplace will grow.

I also like having a phone that not many people have but that's just me!!! And no, i'm not affiliated with Microsoft in any way!

So klo, you use that 'way out' Microsoft "Zune" application to synch your Calendar Facebook and GMail? Don't you find it a bit of a "leap of faith"?

Have you discovered how to tether your WP7 as a broadband modem for your laptop yet?

Or how to fool the laptop registry into accepting the phone as a USB Mass Storage device that you can see and use in Windows Explorer?
  • To be fair though 6.1 still works ok on non-touch phones, I'm running it on an htc s620 & while it's quite an old phone now, it does what it does very well (even if that's not as much as many newer phones).

Only real problem is so little development any more, just about all the useful programs have moved to newer platforms (especially considering it's non-touch, which in many cases required a separate .cab file to the touch-screen version).

Kinda like still using win 98 I suppose, it won't get any better but if you can do without using the latest browsers & other proggies & don't mind keeping archives of any useful software you'll want later, you can get by quite well, if unfashionably and on old-spec kit too. :D
  • My last device was a winmo 6.1 device, i quite liked it and would not have upgraded if it had not been for the touch screen failing...

it was a 3 way split for me... desire hd with android 2.2, HD7 with win7 and iphone 4....

iphone was quickly dismissed... i am not a sheep,

the windows 7 whls nice it is clear that it is the same as apple os in the way it is locked down

i went droid and have not looked back... loads of really useful apps, great games, the best individualisation options... brilliant
  • Between the 2 handsets the onmia 7 wins it for me with it's amazing samoled screen!
