I think the shop owner is being rather cheeky just suggesting that the curtains be altered rather than replaced, never mind asking the OP to pay more!0

Paying that much I would not accept another panel being added either if it makes it look like a botch job.
If you do accept this then make it abundandlty clear that if you are still not satisfied you will be requiring a full refund.
They will be able to reuse the material.0 -

Was the pole already in situ?
How far either side of the widow does the pole stick out?0 -
The pole was measured and fitted by the same company. It is about 2 feet longer than the window at both sides. I asked for the pole and curtains to be wall to wall.
