simple test -install the iPlayer desktop and download a full show.... if its still jerky its your PC, if it plays fine its likely your net connection (could be verified by trying from another machine on your same connection)

If the former need to fiddle about fixing your PC, if the latter you'll be fiddling -checking your internal house phone wiring (bell wire disconnected? speed increase if you disconnect everything and plug into the master test socket), and compare ISPs / the package you're on with what others are delivering in your area.

without a few further details i would say your laptop is the problem as a 5.7mb net connection should be more than ample and since iplayer uses flash you need to meet the minimum requirements for flash which are here http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/systemreqs/

    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

    Thanks for the replies.

    I'm using WindowsXP.

It's not just iPlayer - watching tv via tvcatchup.com or a movie via blinkbox is not very satisfactory.

So i need a computer that is at least Pentium 4.

This laptop was only 20 pounds plus a tenner P+P on ebay.

They had some which were 133Mhz

This one at 600Mhz is better but not good enough then?

XP running with only 256Mb of RAM is really going to be very slow to do anything ... if you can upgrade to at least 512Mb (or preferably 1Mb, you MIGHT then have a machine that can be used for general browsing etc.... it may even play videos - but you with that spec you are always going to be struggling.

I couldn't afford to pay any more, when i bought it.

It didn't have an ethernet port - but i bought an adapter to work broadband. I installed XP myself.

It works ok for everything else i do.

k prob you gonna have is it is limited and as you want to do more and sites with flash come up its going to be a great up hill struggle and also as you use it more it will get slower and slower remember you running a fresh install at the mo.
