Mobile Phone Idiot Needs Advice Please

OK i have to buy a mobile phone as a present for my teen daughter. My phone is about 10 years old and doesnt have all the bits on it, so im completely confused. New or second hand i dont mind but my budget is £150.00ish.

Now the hard bit :( what she wants it to do.

(Pay & Go on O2 only)

Get emails
Internet browsing/shopping
Call/ Text
Facebook/ Bebo/ Google Maps etc
Play Music (other than a ringtone)
Play various Games
Take pictures

(Yes its still a mobile phone she wants and not a laptop :o)

Any pointers in the right direction is appreciated. Thanks:T

  • I hope she can pay to use it herself or you will be in for some very hefty bills if she wants to use it for the internet etc.

How is she going to run into 'hefty' bills on PAYG? the credit will simply run out and that will be that, unless the parent is willing to stick their hand in their pocket to support such behaviour. Looking at the o2 PAYG packages, as long as they are topping up £10 a month, then she'll get 500mb a month, plenty for facebook and the usage described above.

Tulip09 - is there any particular reason it has to be on 02?

That's exactly what happens most of the time. ;)

She will pay for it herself, and i wont be topping it up, she has never asked me for ohone credit in over a year and i cant see her starting now :) , she has a good package through 02 on old phone (which is now broken and in the bin) and wants to keep her package. And O2 seems to be the only one that works in this area. (we are rural).

  • Can she access the internet with her current phone and package?

First thing is first, you need to make sure whatever package she is on that she needs to have unlimited internet or the phone wont be much use to her.

If you think she is mature enough It may be worth while moving to Tesco Mobile as they use 02s network so you know you get a good signal.

Have a look at this sim card:

    http://www.tescomobilepaymonthly.com/product-page.aspx?!!!!!1d4c0e9f-675e-411f-8400-dd424cb8f9d9&so=1

It has Free internet, unlimited Text and a whopping 500mins.

Then you can get her a http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.209-3479.aspx or similar

I'd check with the daughter as she might be better off with a Blackberry curve (£149) - these seem to be increasingly popular with teenagers because of blackberry messenger, which is basically like unlimited text between other blackberry users.
  • Does it have to be new?

If not, I'd go with an iPhone
  • Orange San Francisco sounds like it ticks all the boxes and can be had for £100 or less :).
