Can I connect a PS3 and PVR to TV?

I am thinking of attaching DS's PS3 to the TV and I would like to keep my existing hard drive recorder and wondered if I could tape 2 channels at the same time. The tv has 2 scarts and HDMI socket, the recorder has 2 scarts but no HDMI. Is this possible and if it is, can anyone advise how I should connect them up? I'm not sure if this is a techie question or a TV question so apologies if I've posted this is in the wrong place.

I assume you currently have the PVR into a SCART on the TV. Plug the PS3 into the HDMI and that's it. If you can currently record 2 channels on your PVR, then that'll keep happening. Or is there something else I'm missing?0

Hi almiller - thank you for your reply. Yes, the pvr is connected by the scart (it's an older one so can only record one channel and watch the other) but we also have a Play TV thing for the PS3 (sorry I forgot to mention it) which goes through the ariel to record programmes on to the PS3, but I'm not sure if it's possible use them both on the same TV with the same ariel. If not possible, i'll do as you suggest and connect the PS3 though the HDMI and just record on the old PVR. I thought it would be useful to record another channel as everyone wants to watch different programmes!0

Yes I think that will be possible, you don't need to change the HDMI or SCART leads, just the aeriel, and it works the same way as a VCR would.
I don't have a playTV, but I presume that it has an aerial IN and OUT. So, from the aerial, plug into the PVR IN. Then another aerial lead from the OUT from the PVR to the IN of the PlayTV, then another from the OUT of the PlayTV to the IN of the TV.
Just all in a line, and the important part is that the TV will always be last as it doesn't have an aerial out.0 -
The play tv does have just one ariel IN and OUT so I'll try later and see what happens. I once tried to connect a video/dvd recorder but made such a horrible noise when I put the ariel through it that I didn't dare do it again and I was worried about trying it with the PS3 in case I ruined it. Fingers crossed...0

Hi again. Sorry it's taken a long time but I have to wait till I've got someone to help. Anyway, I got it wrong (again!) the Play TV thing has only got an ariel IN and nothing goes into the TV, apart from the HDMI cable, so maybe it's not possible.0

Nope, this is fine, it looks like you're only using the PVR to receive TV as you're aeriel isn't plugged into the TV, I take it your TV doesn't have Freeview, no problem, makes it simpler.
As I said, don't touch the SCART and HDMI connections.
You want the aerial from the roof to go into aeriel in on the PVR, then an aerial cable from the OUT of the PVR to the IN on the Play TV, and that's it! If you need one of those cables, or adaptors, you'll get them cheap enough in Tesco or whatever.0 -
In my usual setup the ariel does go back into the tv. I had ariel IN to the recorder then OUT to the TV IN and a scart from recorder to TV (it does have freeview).
I then attached the PS3 with a HDMI cable to the TV (as your post No. 2) but I couldn't attach ariel through the Play TV thing back to the TV because there was no ariel OUT socket. I disconnected everything and set up the Play TV thing through the ariel (on it's own) just to do the setup on the PS3 but I've now i've put it all back as before. I couldn't get it to work as in post 7 but do you mean an ariel splitter? I think I read something on another thread and I've found some on the B&Q site and also Maplins so i'll get one and give it a go..0 -
Question is - do you ever use the tuner inside the TV? Does it have Freeview built in or just analogue? If you don't, and you currently only view stuff on the PVR, then take the aerial out of the TV, and put it into the PlayTV, and you're done.
If you want to use the tuner in the TV, THEN you need a splitter, coming out of the PVR.0 -
The TV is supposed to be digital but I can only get BBC1 BBC2 ITV1 Ch4 but that's with the ariel into the PVR. I managed to get a splitter but the ariel IN and OUT are screw/pin fittings and the man in the shop said that they don't usually put screw fittings on TV ariels (just satellites) so i'll have to change the cable fittings. I tried an adapter to change the screw/pins to the normal m/f fitting but it would not work. I wish i'd never started it!0

A splitter will halve the signal strength, so you can expect fewer channels. I don't like the sound of this splitter, it shouldn't be screw, it should just be the same push connectors that you're using with the aerial. My advice would be to give up on the TV, and view all your stuff on the PVR or PS3.0
