Virgin Mobile refuse to sell phones if they are to be unlocked.
I will apologise now but this is a bit of a rant, any help would be appredicated though!
I Went into the swish new Virgin Mobile shop in the Gateshead Metrocentre today with a friend and was greeted with lots (literally!) of very helpful staff. The girl explained that there was 10% off all phones as they only opened last week and they would give us £25 worth of credit as well. The girl then over heard us talking about whether phones were locked or not and explained they were. At this my mate said (to me) that if he got one he could just get it unlocked.
A few minutes later as I was looking at there contract deals a woman came over who introduced herself as a team coach and said that because we were planning on unlocking phones they would have to refuse to serve us! When we questioned this we were told it was company policy. I tried to explain that I was looking at a contract (using the ntl:telewest deals) but was told that neither of us would be served! I eventually asked for the head office phone number to complain after discussing the issue with her reasonably completley failed and she said she couldnt unless her manager was present. When I asked for the head office number again I was told that they would only do this if I provided my own name, address and phone number!! After explaining I would not do this I eventually managed to get a name and number before leaving the store.
I am really annoyed at this. I know that people can refuse to serve anybody but it was her whole attitude that was shocking.
Does anybody have any ideas who I can complain to or what Richard Bransons mobile number is ;o)
Thanks
So now you know that if you want a cheap mobile phone from Virgin make sure you dont tell them it may be unlocked else where!!

Wow, thats a 1st, seems like a new harsh policy on VM's part on new phones, they really want to lock you down loyalty wise, and whats stranger, I've bought 1 contract and 1 PAYG indirect on VM were unlocked, 1 direct one was locked however, after £30 credit was put on they were HAPPY to send an unlock code.
There seems to be a "left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing" with VM now with their call centres running one policy and their high street stores running another far more strict one.0 -
they still have the £30 unlock policy. These guys just said they were going to buy the cheap phone - subsidised by Virgin - and then unlock it so Virgin would not get their subsidy money back. This is fair enough in my eyes! Companies are in existence to make money you know!

We never said we were going to get them unblocked. My friend said he was considering it - as he is actually moving to Oz and wants to make sure they work over there.
If they had said that you could unblock the phone via VM after using £30 of credit thats fine, its probably what we would pay anyway.
What isnt fair is the way the whole thing was handled and the fact the point blank refused to serve me, even though I was considering a contract.Save a life. Learn emergency first aid.
