Yeah you need a diagnosis and a needs statement to get SAAS to fund you JP.
Sh, tints at an optician are never the same as the display ones due to glazing, I daresay an optician that did the test would be able to get the tint for you but a regular high street optician would be limited to sunglasses type colours with only a few different strengths (we do 4 colours in 5 strenghts). If you needed yellow, red, green, purple etc you'd be hard pressed to find a high street optician who'll do it.0 -
I was told by someone that if I know what colour tint I need, (I don't) then I could just go into an opticians and get a tint that way.
Although I don't think many colours are available.
Glaswejen, did you know you can now get irlen contacts?0 -
Yeah Jen but I have dry eyes and my eye curve isn't standard so they're not suitable for me just now. I'm quite happy with coloured paper and my mini overlays.0

ah thats a shame, my daughter is going for a retest on friday with the hope of changing to contacts. She is so excited!0

Irlens requires specific coloured tints, mine was a really strange shade of blue/purple, regular blue sunglasses did nothing for me.
Bestspud, SAAS gave me £250 for my glasses, they wouldn't pay for the assessment as that was "diagnostic" but it was on my needs assessment under Irlens syndrome. I was told at the time that if the glasses were to be worn all the time to help with balance/co-ordination then there's no funding, if the glasses are soley for reading/writing then there is funding.
JP you need to apply for DSA, get the money from SAAS and then buy them and send the receipt back, don't buy them before SAAS have ok'd them because it's a lot of money to shell out. Student services will be able to get you a needs assessment.
It was the university that funded my test, not DSA.
When I had the dyslexia assessment, it was picked up that overlays made a big difference to my reading speed and accuracy, so the report recommended I be tested for Irlens. The university then paid for the test but I was told I would have to fund the glasses myself if they were recommended.
I have it on my needs assessment but they will only fund things like coloured paper and computer software and not glasses. Saying that, I said I was happy with that and didn't query glasses, so maybe I could have had them funded if I'd requested them...?
As it is, I'm happy with overlays so it's not a problem.0 -

I never even asked the uni to fund my Irlens assessment, the test centre (at a different uni) told me there was no funding under DSA so I just accepted that.
I was unable to get a laptop through DSA because I black out but I needed help with reading lecture slides, perhaps that's the difference? That or SAAS were just in a good mood that year.0 -

Who knows how they decide these things lol!
I'm with the OU now and obviously the DSA assessment is a lot different from a brick uni as I don't have lectures as such.
They do seem to have tightened up over the last year or so as well.0 -
the best tint for me is a purple one. first time i managed to get it, itn was free!
was told that with RP the tint comes free.
since then ive not mamaged to get purple and its never been free!
im on such a limited income that i cant pay for it.............eventhough i know that without the tint the sight i have will deteriorate.
