Self Build?

I wondered if anyone here has taken the plunge, bought some land and built their own home on it.
DH and I are only just starting to look into the possiblility of this and would welcome any tips or advice from people who have been there and done it.
At the moment we are thinking along the lines of a "kit" house by a company called Potton. You choose one of their many designs and get it built on the land you've bought. Well, that's the simple idea but I imagine there are lots of pitfalls to look out for. However, it seems that doing this is a good investment and often cheaper than buying a new build on a purpose built development.
Any comments?

Yes we did that, it is a good way of getting a "one-off" house very reasonably.
We did our own design, but most kit companies have a standard range that can be adapted to your needs.
Potton is a well known company, so you will be OK with them.
Get a fixed price for the build, think carefully about what you want and stick to it, changes are expensive. Expect things to cost 50% more than you thought they would and don't overstretch yourself!!0 -
