Not sure if this is the right place as it applies to a few thingse.g retirement, green and eithcal and I wannado it so board guides please feel free to move it, thanks:D
I have to release some money to carry on living on.
I have a little bit of ground that I was planning to sell but after a short break recently staying in a little cottage that was open plan kitchen and lounge downstairs, bedroom and shower/toilet upstairs actually in the roof space other than having a loft.
On seeing this, it hit me that I would probably be better off selling my house and building one of these for me on the land.
I am in the process of applying for planning permission, in the meantime I am trying to research ways of building it with a view to :-
cost effective - cheaply as poss
warmth keeping out damp etc.
green and ethical and lots more, I know I haven't decribed this very professionaly.
The cottage was built from stone with 2foot thick walls and I would love that but think it would be too expensive.
I would greatly appreciate any advice and/or pointers to sites that would be of help etc.
Thanks to anyone who had the patience to read and more thanks for any replies.

Hello needmoney
I think this would be better placed in the 'In my home' board, so I'll move it across.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

There are stacks of options here.
The current favourite is timber frame - timber construction with exterior blockwork to keep out the elements. These are extremely thermally efficiant. Companies speciaise in building timber frame kits that arrive on site and can be constructed quicky, saving huge chunks of lead time.
However there are other options:
Block work and brick construction - in my mind more solid than timber frame but you get less insulation and more heat loss through the same thickness walls.
Beko blocks. These are relitively new and mortgage companies are only just getting used to them. They Consist of expanded polystirene blocks that are assembled like lego then have concrete poured into them. Both surfaces of the walls are then treated to a fascad ofyour choice.
All timber buildings. These are more popular now. Any Home building and renovation magazine will have details.
In fact that magazine could answer your questions better than I can....Behind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0 -

My SIL has visited the show home of these people.
She would love to have a plot to develop, but land with planning approval is hard to find.
Good luck with your project.0 -

HugoSP, thanks. Had a sneeky look at a book in WHSmith whilst away and saw those blocks that get filled with concretebut couldn't remember the name. I agree with you about timber frames my daughter's creaks everywhere.
Moss5, thanks too and I hope your sister finds her plot of land, I suppose that's the only way I'm lucky as I have that even though it's tiny,, but I only want a tiny dwelling, time to scale right down now for my 'older' age:D
Some of those houses on the Potton site made me blush my house is onlt worth about a quarter of the lowest of the cost to build.:o of course in a different area it would be worth much more.
ardr0ck:beer: thanks too don't know how I came to miss that thread, serves me right for looking at New Posts.
Not sure which post it was in but the building forum is really interesting.
Thanks again all.Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)
