In need of some advice

Im hoping that some of you fellow forum members will be able to point me along the right road regarding a new mobile phone.

I have been with O2 for a number of years since falling out with Orange and have to say that (Touching wood) i have had no problems with O2 whatsoever although to be honest im not exactly on the phone 24/7.

I have a very old phone that is nearing it's last legs and have been looking at getting a new HTC Desire HD as a couple of chaps at work have them and they look and feel a realy nice phone, Now here is my problem.

I do not know a great deal about mb usage or what i can do with it and having seen T-Mobiles offer for what i would like to pay every month which comes with a 3gb allowence this to me seems very good indeed.

I phoned O2 to ask for my PAC code and was offered the same amount of minutes and unlimeted texts but they could only offer 500mb data allowence and i was wondering if this would be enough for me.

I do not have an internet phone right now and have never had one before so i realy have no clue?, I have searched the forum and read many posts and topics but im very confused and still no further forward as to what i should do.

If i got the phone my general internet usage would be using facebook and buying and selling on ebay, I would also need to send emails although not a lot, Im not one for downloading things although the odd game or song is something i may do once in a while, It is possible i would watch the odd you tube video but in all fairness this would not be a lot as i can do this from my pc at home.

The advice i am after is does anyone usualy go over there 500mb data allowence?.

Your usage sounds very similar to mine and since the 16th Nov (when I got it) I've used 59MB.
  • 500MB is more than enough for just casual internet usage, if you keep away from !!!!!!ing media then the data allowance shouldn't be an issue, but if you do go over the cap you will receive a text message, have your speed throttled to about 13kbps (slow!!!), but you wont be charged anything extra unless you opt for one of the top up bolt ons.

According to O2 97% of their customers don't even use 500MB, to be honest I believe that, I consider myself a pretty heavy internet user on my phone, very occasional tethering (don't tell anyone!), !!!!!!ing, facebook, email, constant sync with google's services, browsing and downloading a few apps every month and I use about 400MB a month max and that's without using my home wifi, BTOpenzone or The Cloud (both of which O2 give you access to).
  • The Desire hd uses the internet alot, i remeber having to turn off all the automatic updares that programs like weather and facebook where using because of the data usage. I was using on average about 20mb per day which meant that towards the end of the month I might be a little short on data. Get a data counter, they are really useful. after about a week of wifi usage i saw that i clocked up around 1.5 gig lol but I did use it for nearly everything since its "free".
Also I didn't really use my data allowance towards google maps I'm not sure if I would have managed with data if i had used the navigation. As long as they don't charge you for over usage then you should manage ok, try and use wifi whenever you can where battery permits.

Good Luck with your new phone

500MB is hard to go over, from what your saying it sounds like you'll be fine, least you know what your signal will be like with 02
  • If you don't use internet a lot and check updates are fine 500MB should be enough.

500MB is right on the edge for me however. I read e-mails, casually browse, use Sat-Nav and have found that I'm predicted to use 616MB this month. With T-Mobile so it doesn't matter although the month before I used 1.3GB!
  • Thanks for the replies people i appreciate them.

Would i be right in thinking that o2 charge even if you use wifi at home as im sure one of the threads i was reading somebody had said they got charged?

I agree about the signal and i know that is always good in my area which leads me to think i should stay with what i know to be a good service, Of course as were all aware though now a days there is no such thing as lotalty where big companies are concerned, They just want your money which kind of leans me a little towards the t-mobile deal as im thinking why should i not get the maximum i can for my hard earned cash

Confused lol yep thats me :D

No they don't, no network operator will charge you for using your home wifi, they wont even know when you connect to it. The "unlimited wifi" bolt on that's included with smart phones gives you free access to BTOpenzone and The Cloud wireless hotspots. The thread in question was somebody getting charged for using the mobile data network (e.g. a 3G connection) by mistake without any sort of data allowance.
  • Oh i see what you are saying, Thank you for that.

I never thought getting a new phone could be so much hassle :D

Can i just ask please if there are any t-mobile customers on here and if so what is the service like?

Hi I am also after a HTC Desire HD and I'm on o2. I've tried ringing o2 and they say they don't do the Desire HD. Is this what they've offered you? I've tried upgrades and retentions and they have both said I can only get it on o2 through The Carphone Warehouse!
