Strange 'kickspace' heater??? - pics included.

In the summer I moved into a new build housing association flat. There is a heater under the oven which is labelled 'Myson kickspace 500'.

My living room is open plan with the kitchen and has the tiniest radiator at one end of the living room which is supposed to heat the entire living room and kitchen! Now that winter has come I would like to use the heater but have never encountered one like this and I don't think it works! Now obviously I can ring the HA and ask them to come and fix it but wanted to avoid a repairman coming only to be told I need to flick a switch or do something simple.

These are the switches...

MSE027Medium.jpg

The one at the bottom I have figured out, + is a fast fan - is a slow fan and o is off. The other switch has a blue dot at the bottom and when this is selected it blows out cool air. When you flick the switch to the red dot nothing happens.

Does anyone have this type of heater, if so is the fan meant to blow out hot air when selected or is it meant to radiate heat instead? If it's meant to blow then does anyone have any idea why it only blows on the cold function?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

My best guess is that it has a thermostatic switch inside so that it will only work on the red setting when the unit is full of hot water, ie. the central heating is switched on, so it could be a faulty thermostatic switch or the unit is full of air instead of water or you didn’t have the central heating running when you tried to switch it on?

By the way if, the photos are of your actual heater it looks like the fitters have left on the protective covering on the front of the stainless steel grill, you might like to peel it off before it gets too hot and starts to smell!

Thanks, central heating was on so looks like it is faulty.
  • Well I can only offer you one idea that you might like to try, I guess that all your radiators have thermostatic radiator valves (except for one maybe that you should leave alone), if so make a note what number each radiator valve is set at, turn on the heating then leaving about 2 or 3 minutes between each one turn all the valves to their lowest setting, wait another couple of minutes then one at a time return the valves to their original setting, if there is air in the 'kickspace' heater this might force it out.
It doesn't always work but it's worth trying.

Mine has a sperate isolation switch on the wall.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Thanks Mr Meanie, will give that a go...

ariba 10 - Does yours blow out heat when it's on the hot setting or radiate it? I'm just a bit confused as to why the cool blows but the hot does nothing at all.

Most probably wants venting, if you take the front cover off, you should be able to pull it out slightly(as it has flexable connections)you will see a airvent at the rear, Vent it.

We have a Myson 500 in our tiny kitchen, I needed the space where the rad was for more units so it was the only option, ours is attached to the CH system but it also has an electric function for when the heating isn't on. Ours has 3 sets of switches, I think the bottom one (which doesn't appear in your picture) is for the electric only option, glad you got me to go and have a look at it close up because it was a bit grubby on top and I have given it a wipe over so I feel virtuous now!

Edited to add I have had a look at the link above and I think we have the 500 Duo model

Sorry to appear dim but what does 'vent it' mean?!

"Vent it" means letting the air out of a radiator, radiators need to be full of water to work properly, over time air will collect in the top of the radiator and it will feel cold at the top.

    Have a look here:-

My last post was an attempt to force the air out of the heater (if that is your problem) without having to pull out and "vent" or "bleed" the air out of the kickspace heater, as I said before, sometimes it works , sometimes it doesen't.
