Tipping at the hairdressers

Wyndham wrote:I find this difficult. I have my hair washed and cut, never blow dryed unless it's a special occasion - and for this I pay about £13. It's not a complex cut, and generally takes less than half an hour from me walking in the door to walking out again.
My husband has his hair cut (not washed) and it costs him about £5. Now I think both stylists are doing the same thing, but because I'm a woman it costs more - substantially more.
One day I'm going to claim for sex discrimination on this one!!
Though after saying that, I generally tip a pound or two as well....
If its not a complex cut why dont you get your hubby to do it!
sorry i used to teach hairdressing as well as being a colour techie and salon owner. You pay the high prices people have quoted because of the training, and the use of good products amongst other things.... if you are paying loads and are not getting those things then you must be daft! go find somewhere where you get value for money!
tipping stylists shows personal appreciation and most stylists do rely on them financially. however, myself and all the stylists I ever employed also understood that not everyone was able to do so, and a heart felt 'thankyou' with one of those lovely smiles that tells you someone is over the moon with what you have done to their hair, means more than any size tip!
..............and breathe out ............
sorry, just that it is such a hard work, and the people in the trade generally do it because they love it but they often dont get the recognition they deserve so heres one for all the hairdressers and YES tip if you can!
:T:EasterBun ...what more do I need to say?!
its all in the name of medical science.0 -
There are three of us in my family with hair, the amount of times we all have our hair cut, eat out and take rides in taxis there is no money to tip.
Dont get me wrong we used to but it gets ridiculous. Mind you the awful stares you get from people makes you feel guilty but makes me all the more determined to not tip. i think pizza hut and tgi fridays are among the worst!!!0 -
It takes my boyfriend 2 minutes to do his hair and me - well a good while
so iu understand why it costs more for me to have hair cut and styled0 -
Never, because its £30 for a flipping cut, and thats the owner.

I have never tipped any of my hairdressers and never heard of doing so before.
My hairdresser is rich, she's always going on fancy holidays.I :heart2: saving money0 -
I get my hair cut once a month, i get it coloured every 2 months, price varies for £15 cut £35 cut and colour, and always tip my hairdresser a fiver. However i know someone who used to train as a hairdresser and they reckon i should tell them to give the person who washes my hair a quid of it as they get such bad pay... i always forget though and then feel bad when i remember!
I probaly tip too many people, i find myself in taxi's where the driver makes no effort to talk to me at all, and all the way through the jpourney im telling myself, give him the notes and wait for the change.... but then i dont, i just give him the 20 and say keep the change before scampering!
Bit that annoys me though is working in a shop and i serve someone (not often, im a supervisor so sit in the office browsing mse!) and they tell me to keep the change, im not allowed to. Now im not talking aot of money but it all adds up, im supposed to keep it in the till, but i know that only then gets banked and goes to the owners bank account so i always put it in the charity box... which makes me feel good :-)October 2006 debt at 11,125.78
March 2008 debt at 6,604.55
Have gone to poland and bought a macbook too, ooops not exactly helping the debt...0 -
My hairdresser charges me £8 for a cut (gents cuts are always so much cheaper - but then I don't get a cup of tea/coffee!). Takes him 30 minutes plus and I am always very happy with the result. He isn't slow, he just takes his time to do it right. I know he makes virtually nothing, so I always give him a tenner and tell him to keep the change. I know the £2 goes straight in his pocket and not into a "pot" so I'm happy to help as I would be willing to pay £10 a cut - but don't tell the owner that!
He is even willing to come and do a home-cut (which I have done) but it works out slightly more expensive as I have to cover his travelling (but then I am paying this in fuel when I travel to him anyway!)
I think it is a personal choice thing. If you are happy with the service, give them a little extra (you're guaranteed a good cut next time too then!).0
