Tipping at the hairdressers

I've just started going to a hairdressers salon ( I used to have a mobile hairdresser come to me) but Im a bit confused about the tipping aspect in salons.

a. Should I tip or not?
b. How much?
c. Who do I tip - I usually have one person wash my hair, another cut and style it and sometimes someone else tasking the bill.

What does everyone else do????!

  • I worked as a hairdresser quite a while ago now but when i was working we really relied on our tips, most people would tip the shampooist(as they are the lowest paid) and most would tip the stylist, we found however the main tippers were the elderly. but not in all cases!
  • I used to tip £1 to my stylist if she did a good job, but some used to tip the shampooist £1 and the stylist £1.
I cant afford to go to the hairdressers as often as I used (2 kids under 2 and one wage) so I just make do till I am desperate.

    a. Should I tip or not?

    No you shouldn't.

  • I've never ever tipped as I think paying £21 for a wet cut is plenty enough to pay!
  • I went to the hairdressers today and paid by card - didn't give me option to tip

blimin eck though it was like £70! and i did not have a colour, oops
  • I never tip hairdressers because when they sneakily charge me the best part of £100 by adding on "extra" after "extra", I have no money left to tip them with!

I only would if a mobile hairdresser came to my home.

I tip my hairdresser £2 (or more if I'm feeling generous!) I've been going to her for years and I started tipping after I'd get a Cheers-type greeting from all the staff whenever I went in! And I only get a haircut every 4 months or so! She always remembers our last conversation and what I'm up to, and I always get a cup of tea and a biscuit (or champagne at Christmas) and the price has stayed low even though they've gone upmarket in the past few years.

I've worked as a part time waitress for ages and I know how much I rely on my tips and I'm sure hairdressers wages aren't much higher.

  • My GF is a hairdresser and I can't believe how bad the pay is even though she has been doing it for 12years or so.

It is not the person cutting your hair that sets the prices (unless they happen to own it) and when prices go up it does not mean a pay rise & most certainly not a half decent 1.

Many people tip waitresses etc cause of low pay & service they have provided, why not hairdressers too if you are satisfied with service?

I always tip hairdressers usually rounding it up to the nearest ten.I thought everyone did.My mum taught me to always tip as their pay is so bad but never tip the owner.

I always tip 10% rounded and I give the shampooist £1.
