Can try a basic repair of xp -
Download GLARY UTILITIES
http://www.glaryutilities.com/download/gusetup_slim.exe
REBOOT then run the ONE CLICK scan
Goto MODULES / SYSTEM TOOLS / WINDOWS STANDARD TOOLS / then run SYSTEM FILE CHECKER
Assuming you have the disc you can boot from the xp disc and try a repair with that:idea:0 -
This might work -
Turn off Caching of Thumbnails in Hidden thumbs.db Files
· Click the Start orb
· Enter gpedit.msc in the search box and hit Enter.
· Expand User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Windows Components.
· Click on Windows Explorer.
· Right-click the entry "Turn off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files" and choose Edit.
· Enable the setting.

If it is Windows XP HOME then gpedit.msi does not exist, only in XP PRO0 -
