I would like to wish I knew why you are so determined to reduce this discussion to chaos, but the truth is that I don't really care.

    Thank you.

I will go through your posts next so we can highlight your most constructive moments.

But some of us, on both sides of the discussion, are learning something of great value here. I am genuinely sorry you have both chosen not to continue. .

Why do you think they choose not to contribute anymore?

Nothing to do with you by chance? :rotfl:

  • make it harder for recruitment agencies to deceive anyone who has read this?

Because we are not behaving like the timid forelock tugging sheep that recruitment agencies would like us to be?

One thing we do know, and the only thing we really need to know, is that the very last thing recruitment agencies care about are the people who make them their money. And that is THE WORKERS.

I don't have an axe to grind at all!

  • Candidates can gain nothing from telling agents about their other roles, and they can also lose nothing by not telling them. Any RC that tries to tell them otherwise is not worth wasting time on in my opinion.QUOTE]

This isn't entirely true but without offering you suggestions, what would you like me to say (to the client that I work in partnership with) when I am asked where you are at in the recruitment process and if you have had any interviews?

You might say that giving general information to a Consultant is ok but the next question the client will ask is who the interview is with.

I have clients who have agreed/wanted to interview people almost certainly because their competitors are showing a direct interest in the individual.

Okay... I tried to stay off this thread, but as I deal with recruitment agents a lot I decided to.

The advice you are giving is not wholly applicable to how I'd deal with recruitment agents. Is it something that's relevant to your field as it's a niche area?

My comments are not limited purely to my personal experience of working in this particular job. I have worked for another recruitment company in the past. Again not high street, but not exactly niche either. I've also had both good and bad experiences with agencies myself.

I'm not sure why anyone should use their common sense when it comes to giving out references to agents or telling them where they are interviewing. I was told very early on by a recruitment agent to never tell another agency where I was being interviewed by (as I'd just done with him) as they would send other candidates in my place. It's a big no-no in what I do.

I meant exactly that - use your common sense and *don't* give out this information. Think you misunderstood me here.

I am aware that agencies will fish for leads out of me, and I'm happy to do that under certain circumstances e.g if I've worked with them for a while, and they are asking me for some details, and I'm confident they will approach someone respectfully.

    Agreed.
The only thing we know for sure, is that we know nothing

Not to you Lily sorry. You are not worth my time.

Or we could scrap recruitment agencies and get back to company's employing people, Until this happens your general labourer will remain out of work,

I am not disputing that it would be reasonable to ask if a candidate has had any interviews. Although if you thought that a candidate was about to get offered a role elsewhere, I imagine that you would be less inclined to put them forward for other roles as it would be a waste of your time? (that is my speculation not an accusation).

In comment to your last paragraph, I would think this only applies in specialist recruitment and not things like general admin roles.
(Again this is my speculation. I have to almost write a disclaimer on here now as certain people are twisting everything I say! :rotfl:)

Agencies also stop calling you if you can't happen to do a certain day for them, They will ask you do do a job that you never signed up for ie in my instance I worked on a building site for a day for them which was a favour from me to them has the other agency staff didn't turn up, However If you happen to say no to them just once then your name will be at the bottom of pile which should be illegal, If you work out how many company's that are under one agency then that means If I see a job advertised and I go for it and it just happens to be through the agency I has used previous then what do you think will happen ? They will not take your application which in my eyes is bang out of order, So basically if you have bad experiences with 2 or 3 agencies then your chance of employment is virtually nil,

That is a fair point, some of the leading High Street Agency names have fingers in Some very deep pies regarding this e.g.

Manpower with The GPO and leading Automotive Industries
NHS Professionals -for jobs in all aspects of the Health service
Reed - in the Police force and other Public Sector organisations
Pertemps - in some large Warehousing organisations.

Admittedly there probably won't be that many vacancies coming up in the next couple of years especially in the public sector roles.

As you say, step on their toes slightly and you would probably be blacklisted with that agency or sent to the bottom of the pile. So if you see a job advertised and then found out it was with that Agency that you were qualified for, your chances of getting the role would be virtually non-existent.

Sadly mate this is how they work. I have applied for loads of jobs again through this agency and not once have I had a reply either by phone or email and when I do phone them they just say that they have my application and thanks for applying, I can honestly say that my chances of getting another job with any company through this agency are non existent and may I add that a lot of company's use this agency in the Manchester area so you could be talking 40 / 50 company's that I will be blacklisted from, If that's not discrimination then I don't know what is lol
